MISSION STATEMENT
There will be at Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. an emphasis on student
achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines.
This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is
free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a
climate that is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and that addresses
the learning needs of both staff and students.
MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION
It has been our pleasure to see that by the close of our first term
in the Intermediate division, our new Grade 7 students appear to be happy
and feeling at home at Adam Scott. The Grade 7 students that we have talked
to have spoken highly of their teachers, the extra-curricular activities
and the special events that have occurred at the school. Fund-raising efforts
continue by our French Immersion teachers who are getting prepared to take
our students to Quebec in June. During this time of year when many families
are celebrating Kwanza, Hanukkah, Christmas and other religious special
days, guests are arriving and many meals are being prepared. If you shop
at M and M Meat Shops, before you make your purchase, please let them know
that you want to support Adam Scott's fund-raisers. If you do this, then
a portion of your purchase amount will be donated by them to the school.
For those of us who do not celebrate during this time of year, we still
have to eat so, please feel free to support this fund-raiser.
Our high school music department is putting on its' seasonal musical
this Wednesday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium
and we are inviting everyone who is able to attend. Ms. Gauthier's music
students do a remarkable job presenting their accomplishments and it makes
for a very enjoyable evening out. We also have our Intermediate Drama
Presentation next week. Ms. Scott and Mrs. Locklin have worked many
hours to put together a remarkable performance from Monday through Wednesday
and we are again hoping that many of you will be able to attend. This presentation
will be in lieu of an Open House this year. Our Open House will be re-scheduled
for later on in the winter.
As many of you know, our board's EQAO results have been released. Our
director, Dr. Avis Glaze, correctly points out that there is room for improvement
and emphasizes that we are all working to increase the scores of Kawartha
Pine Ridge students so they can continue to have success throughout their
school and work careers. At Adam Scott, we benefit from having the Intermediate
and Secondary students in the same facility. Given this closeness, it has
been relatively easy to bring teachers together to determine how to best
support our students to prepare for the Grade 10 Literacy test. The Grade
7 and 8 teachers from our feeder schools are also involved in determining
the best course of action to address the Literacy test concerns. This collegial
and united approach to increasing literacy rates in our schools will undoubtedly
address some of the concerns raised by our test results and we look forward
to sharing our action plan for improvement with you. We would like to note,
however, that even though there remains room for improvement, Adam Scott
students performed very well on the Grade 10 Literacy test with one of
the highest successful pass rates in the board. Our congratulations go
out to all of the students, parents and staff who have worked to bring
about this result.
We want to send a thank you out to all of the Intermediate parents who
took the time to fill out and return the school improvement questionnaire
this year. The results of the questionnaire indicated a high level of on-going
satisfaction with what we are doing here at the school. The greatest area
of concerns are related to eating lunch and regular communication from
the classroom. These concerns will continue to be addressed at the school
level. A more detailed analysis of the survey results will be made available
in the next newsletter as responses are still coming in.
Our next Council meeting is on December 17th , 2002 at 7:00
p.m. in the Learning Resource Library. Please come and be part of our group.
Our Council members have invited a guest speaker to speak about Goal Setting.
We hope to see you there.
In closing, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you
a safe and happy winter break. Hopefully, you will be able to have some
holiday time with your children over the two weeks that school is out of
session. Take quality time for yourselves and your loved ones. Happy holidays.
The Health Unit will be performing dental screening the morning of Thursday,
December 12th and all day Friday, December 13th.
This procedure is mandatory for grade 8 students and takes approximately
5 minutes per student.
Adam Scott Intermediates' will be proudly sporting the Green and White colours this month in 3 Basketball tournaments. SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
The merging of School Councils at Adam Scott between the high school
and the intermediate school has moved ahead successfully as per board directive.
The Intermediate school has a separate committee that meets after the combined
Council meeting. We, on this small but mighty committee, are working hard
to provide the Intermediate students with as many advantages as possible.
In the past, our fund raising efforts have provided items such as Intermediate
school sports jerseys, AAACES (Academics, Athletics, Arts and Community
Service) award medals, Grade 8 graduation costs, classroom extras for each
Intermediate school teacher and science videos. This year, our main fund
raiser will be focused on musical instruments.
Currently, our music classroom is dealing with a shortage of instruments
due to wear and tear and outright breakdown. The money raised would be
used to repair equipment and purchase new instruments. This would better
facilitate all Intermediate students with the opportunity to learn an instrument
that works properly. Learning a musical instrument can open up a whole
new world to students and can lead to a life long love of music.
To facilitate this fund raiser, we will be holding an Open House in
February with a Valentines Day theme. If you would like to get involved
in a one-time school event, this will be your chance. Presently, we are
working on one large fund raising idea for the Open House, but are looking
for more. If you have any ideas on fund raising, entertainment or just
plain fun for the February Open House, feel free to call us. We, as a community,
can make a difference at Adam Scott. A letter will be going home in January
with the meeting dates on which we will plan this event. Please take the
time and help out.
We wish you all the best for a safe and happy Holiday Season.
Upcoming School Council Meetings
December 17th, 7:00 p.m., in the school library
Grant Macdonald will be speaking to us about Goal Setting.
January 21st, 2003, 7:00 p.m. in the school library
People For Education Representative, John Hoffman will be speaking to
us about Building Blocks for Every School.
WINTER WARNING NOTE
Winter will undoubtedly produce days of poor weather conditions. In
order to find out such information as bus cancellations, delays or school
closings, please listen to one of the local radio stations. They will make
frequent announcements regarding the current situation. Information that
will be helpful for you to know includes the bus route number, the bus
company and the driver's name.
Sometimes buses are called early because of deteriorating weather. If
this occurs, please have your arrangements worked out, and please make
sure your child/children know where they are to go. With a limited number
of telephones in the school, it is impossible to contact all families or
receive incoming phone calls.
Here are a few reminders:
Congratulations to Veronique Oldham, 7D, this month's draw winner.
Please sign and return this portion of the newsletter to the school
to indicate you received and read this newsletter. Your child's name will
be entered into a draw for a prize. Return by Monday, December 16, 2002.
