PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Although the weather patterns of the past two weeks would make one wonder whether we are heading into summer or back into winter, the hectic pace of events here at Adam Scott leaves no doubt that we are in the midst of a very busy spring season.

Adam Scott has always been a leader in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. These activities have been well documented in the local media and continue to enhance our school's reputation not only in our community but in the province as well. Examples of these events include our science fair projects, our drama, fashion and music nights plus our athletic teams. Our school also hosted the provincial girls' hockey tournament last month. I appreciate very much the time and commitment shown by the staff who volunteer their time and the parents who support these efforts in a variety of ways.

In the next few weeks, I will be dealing with staffing and timetabling for the year 2002-2003. My goal will be to have every student with a timetable before they leave for their summer vacation. This, as always, is contingent upon our school receiving the necessary staffing information required to perform these tasks in time. Complicating these procedures is the 'double cohort' which faces us in the next year. Many students in grade 12 will be graduating at the same time as the OAC students. Should you have any questions on this topic, please do not hesitate to contact the school. There is a great deal of information regarding this issue available from our student services department.

The focus of our energies at Adam Scott is on improving student achievement. I believe that all students can succeed. Our 3 year school improvement plan is a detailed document that clearly sets out our school's objectives. Currently, we are re-writing every course outline in the school and reviewing our assessment and evaluation practices to align ourselves with the new Ministry guidelines. These plans have been presented to our school council and are available to any parent who requests a copy. In addition, there is a great deal of information about our school, including our results on provincial tests on our school website which is www2.kpr.edu.on.ca/acvi.

I have spoken to our new Director of Education, Dr. Avis Glaze about the successes and challenges of Adam Scott. I am extremely impressed with her vision of education and look forward to her visiting our school in the near future.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss any of the issues mentioned in this newsletter or any other issue related to your son or daughter. My number is 743-7373 Ext. 143.

ADAM SCOTT C. V. I. CODE OF CONDUCT

As part of its Safe Schools Initiative, the Ministry of Education now requires that all schools develop a code of conduct which outlines the standards of behaviour expected from its members.

A safe school is conducive to learning and teaching within an environment that promotes responsibility, respect and academic excellence. The province wide Code of Conduct sets clear minimum standards for behaviour with mandatory minimum consequences, as outlined below.

Suspensions - What is New?

(effective September 2001)

Suspensions will be mandatory for the following offences:

Expulsions - What is New?

(effective September 2001)

The provincial Code of Conduct outlines behaviour for which the police will be involved, the student will immediately be suspended and the matter will proceed to an expulsion hearing. Such infractions are as follows:

The Code of Conduct of Adam Scott C.V.I., in conjunction with provincial standards, will help to ensure that all students, parents, teachers and staff feel safe in their school community.

Adam Scott C.V.I. Extracurricular Participation Policy

Effective September 2002, Adam Scott C.V.I. will be introducing a new Extracurricular policy. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage our students to excel in all areas of student life. You will find below a summary of the new policy.

Students at Adam Scott C.V.I. are encouraged to become involved in extracurricular activities to facilitate the development of leadership skills and to provide opportunities for additional learning. In order to maintain their eligibility status, individuals who join clubs and teams must recognize their responsibilities.

Each situation will be dealt with on an individual basis between the student, teacher and staff advisor. If necessary, consultation with the Adam Scott administration and/or parents may also occur.

Participation Is A Privilege

T.H.A.T FESTIVAL

Come on out to support your fellow students in the T.H.A.T. Festival.

T.H.A.T. represents The High School Alternative Theatre Festival. This event is geared towards generating interest and providing an outlet for theatrical creativity within our High Schools! It's about giving students a chance to express themselves among their peers in a professional setting. It is also an introduction to the Theatre community within our city. This is not a school event but rather a student event in which they learn to take control of many different aspects of Theatre including directing, casting, performance, technical and producing aspects of their own projects.

Watch grade 10 students from Ms. Tennent's and Mrs. Briscoe's drama classes perform their own plays on Sunday, 28 April from 1 - 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, 30 April from 6 - 10 p.m. All shows are at The Gordon Best Theatre on Hunter Street and it only costs $5.00. Come on out for a great time!
