MISSION STATEMENT

At Adam Scott, we believe that education should have these purposes: to help us reach our full potential; to teach us to accept responsibility for our development and behaviour; to increase our awareness of the needs of the world, and through our understanding and positive actions, to make it a better place.

MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

November promises to be a very busy month at Adam Scott. Report cards are being written, students are signing up for extra-curricular activities and fund-rasing activities to support a variety of school based activities are in the works. We are also glad to offer our facilities to administer the flu vaccine. Parents are urged to return the consent forms promptly. Should there be any questions about the vaccine, please call your family doctor. The French Immersion teachers are working diligently to raise money for their trip to Montreal in June. Given their efforts we would like to take a minute to remind you that if you are a shopper at M and Ms and you give them Adam Scott's number (96) that a percentage of the proceeds will go towards the French Immersion trip.

Thanks to the generosity of the teachers there will be a number of extra-curricular events being offered during the cold winter months. Many of these will be offered over the noon hour. This volunteering of time on the teacher's behalf is greatly appreciated and we are certain that the students will also show their enthusiasm by becoming involved in the many activities that are going to be offered. Please see the insert about our AAACS program for an overview. We encourage all students to become involved but, also need to stress that students need to behave in an appropriate manner in order to continue their involvement in these activities.

AAACS for ASIS stands for Academics, Athletics, Arts and Community Service for Adam Scott Intermediate School. In this program students are rewarded for being  involved in a variety of activities at the school or in their community. The insert included in this newsletter outlines the many activities that will be offered by the staff at our school. Please make certain that you remove this sheet and put it on the fridge for your child to easily access throughout the year. The program awards points for involvement in a number of activities. At the end of the year these points are totaled and students who have a certain score will be recognized with an award that speaks to their involvement. Please encourage your child to review the activities offered and listen for announcements that will indicate when each activity is to start. Active involvement in positive activities around the school will undoubtedly lead to a decrease in negative behaviors and make Adam Scott an even safer and more positive place to come and get involved.

Also, an additional insert is included in the newsletter. This is a copy of a survey that we do on a yearly basis as part of our school development plan. Each year we ask for parental input around a number of educational issues and we are requesting your input again. Please take a few minutes to respond to the survey and return it to school. The first ten surveys that are returned will receive a small "thank you for your input" gift from the office.

Finally, in November we all take time to recollect and remember those people who were involved throughout the years in wars and peacekeeping missions who gave their lives for citizens from all over the world. When it is Remembrance Day on November 11, please take a moment or two to reflect on the large number of soldiers, medical personnel and other people who gave their lives so ours could be better.

DRUG & ALCOHOL AWARENESS PRESENTATION

All are invited to attend a Drug & Alcohol Awareness Information Session presented by Constable John Stoeckle. The event will be hosted at:

Adam Scott CVI in Peterborough

Wednesday, November 13, 2002

at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Please invite all parents/guardians in your community to attend.

DRUG & ALCOHOL AWARENESS COALITION

The Peterborough Police Association is hosting Mr. Chuvalo at Showplace Peterborough the morning of Tuesday, November 19th. Grade 8 students will be attending this presentation free of charge. Mr. Chuvalo speaks to students, parents and other groups about drugs and how they have impacted his life. He stresses the fact that in the criminal system, the majority of crimes are committed as a result of substance abuse. In most cases, addicts turn into criminals, not criminals into addicts. He leaves the students and other groups with a message of hope for our future while inviting the listener into his private life. He shares some of what he has learned about life, with the hopes of reaching those who are at risk.

SKATEBOARDS AND ROLLER-BLADES

Please remind your son/daughter that skateboards and roller-blades are not to be brought to school. We used to allow them for transportation purposes, but as some students have been choosing to use them in the hallway they are no longer allowed to be on school property.

LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY

Students are expected to hand in all of their assignments on time. If, for some reason, an assignment is going to be late, each student must make certain he/she conferences with the teacher before the due date to arrange an alternate due date. If such a conference occurs, then no marks will be deducted for late assignments. If the student does not choose to conference, then 5% of the assignment mark will be deducted per day, up to a maximum of 50% of the value of the assignment. If the assignment is more than two weeks late, then no marks will be awarded. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the school and ask to speak to your child's teacher.

SAFETY AND SUPERVISION ISSUES

Intermediate aged students are expected to be supervised by an adult throughout the school day. For this reason teachers supervise before school, after school and during the noon hour. It is essential that all students be where the supervisors are located in order for us to make certain that they are safe. With the cold weather fast upon us, it is necessary that students come appropriately dressed for outside. Over the noon hour, all Intermediate students are expected to be outside after they have eaten their lunch unless they have a pass from a teacher to stay inside. Students who do not respect the rules and expectations around this issue will be reminded of the rules. Those students who continue to disregard the rules will have a consequence. We hope that you will take a few minutes to review the supervision expectations with your son/daughter so there are no problems in this area. Warm outdoor clothing will also make it easier for students to remain outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and exercise that they need.

NOON HOUR POLICIES

As mentioned previously, students are expected to be outside during the noon hour. Those students who are inside are either involved in extra-curricular activities or are receiving extra help and support from staff. Those students who are in the school for the aforementioned reasons are allowed to be in the hallways at noon hour to put away coats, get needed materials and supplies. As long as students behave themselves in an appropriate manner, such access at noon hour will continue.

AGENDAS

We still have a number of agendas available to students. These agendas cost $7.00 and are very useful. Information pertaining to school policy and behavioral expectations can be found in the front of each agenda and the pages are filled with useful tips pertaining to school based success. If your child does not yet have an agenda, please send in the money (attention to Ms Soucie) and an agenda will be provided. Developing organization skills and helping students to manage their time successfully is a large part of our daily routine and the use of an agenda can facilitate that process.

STUDENTS BEING LATE TO CLASS

An on-going issue from year to year has to do with students being late to class. At Adam Scott we believe that all students are capable of being on time and being prepared for class. Our school wide late policy is as follows. After 6 lates, students are referred to the office for a discussion about the expected behavior and they are to serve a 60 minute detention. At 9 lates, students have an in-school suspension for one afternoon, and at 12 lates, students are suspended from school for one day.

WINTER WEATHER EXTREMES

Temperatures will soon be falling and westerly winds will cause chilling conditions on our school playground. Students need to wear warm clothing outside. Many Intermediate students choose not to wear hats, gloves, boots, et cetera and thus, are ill-prepared to brave extreme weather conditions. Your reminders are helpful.

WINTER WARNING NOTE

Although winter weather has not yet begun, there will undoubtedly be some days of poor weather conditions. In order to find out such information as bus cancellations, delays or school closings, please listen to one of the local radio stations. They will make frequent announcements regarding the current situation. Information that will be helpful for you to know includes the bus route number, the bus company and the driver's name.

Sometimes buses are called early because of deteriorating weather. If this occurs, please have your arrangement worked out, and please make sure your child/children know where they are to go. With a limited number of telephones in the school, it is impossible to contact all families or receive incoming phone calls.

Here are a few reminders:

If you wish to discuss this policy further, please contact the school.

INNOVATIVE COMMUNICATION

http://www2.kpr.edu.on.ca/acvi/courses.htm

At Adam Scott we have been using the internet in order to communicate information about the school as well as individual programs and courses. All of our teachers are able to post information about courses and homework assignments so students can access such information from home. At this point in time not all teachers are using this technology so it is still important that students fill out their agendas at school. Log-on to the above website and checkout this new support for students.
