Webquest:
The Fishing Industry in Canada

The
following webquest is designed to introduce you to different resources
available for research. You will focus on organizations involved in the
management of Canadian fisheries.
- Open
your internet browser and type in the address http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/ . Select
“English” and enter the “Department
of Fisheries and Oceans” site. This
site is supported through the Federal government.
- Under
“Subjects” (left side of the screen), select Aquaculture. Define Aquaculture below.
- From
the left hand side of the screen select Statistics and Key Figures. What are the top five species
produced through aquaculture?
- Return
to the home page and visit Overfishing
and International fisheries and oceans governance (on the right side
of the screen). After reading
the section titled “highlights”, which two countries is the Minister of
Dept. Oceans and Fisheries overseas working with to develop sustainable
fisheries.
- Enter http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/index.html
into your internet browser. Select English and enter the Ministry of
Natural Resources site. On the left side of your screen click on “Let’s
Fish Ontario”.
- Select
“2005-2006 Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary”. Under the section
“2005-2006 fishing regulations summary”, select Fish Identification Chart. From the chart provided, which type
of salmon grows to the greatest length?
- Return
to the MNR homepage. Who is the minister of Natural Resources?
- Enter http://www.cbc.ca/archives
into your web browser. On the left
hand side of the screen type Fishing
into “search the CBC archives site”. CBC is a public and privately
supported media centre that uses radio and television to provide
information to Canadians.
- Choose one of the results you got
and write the title below. Click on your selection.
- At the
top of the page view the timeline associated with your choice. Using the
timeline, what is the time span associated with your selection?
- Scroll
through the various titles associated with your selection to gain an
understanding of what resources are available through this site.
- Go to
Adam Scott homepage. Click on Library
resources on the left hand side of the screen.
- Under “find newspaper, magazine or
encyclopedia articles” click EBSCO
Research Resources.
- Select EBSCOhost web. Choose Advanced
Placement source.
- Type Maclean’s into the bar titled
“Journal”. In the “find” bar type Fishing.
- From
the results page view an article of your choice. Write down the title,
author and date published below.
- In
further studies, if you are interested in a copy of an article, choose the
email option and email the article to your account. Do not print articles
in the library.

any questions about searching resources online or through your school’s
database, please ask your teacher or library research personnel (Mr. Nevin!).
