PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

MISSION STATEMENT

There will be at Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. an emphasis on student achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines. This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical and emotional harm, delivered within a climate that is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and that addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.

The mission statement of Adam Scott is something all of us strive for each and every day. The activities and achievements of our students and staff over the past two and a half months continue to convince me that we are on the right track. The performances of our students in classroom and extra-curricular activities reflects our commitment to high expectations for student achievement. Our recent Commencement was a vivid demonstration of just how much our students have learned during their years at Adam Scott. Our community continues to be very supportive and appreciative of our students. Some recent examples are the Terry Fox Run, Students Supporting Seniors, and this week's poignant Remembrance Day assembly. The veterans I have spoken to were very moved by the sincerity of our students as presented in our auditorium on November 11th.

In order to continue my focus on school improvement I have included a survey for parents to fill out. It is my hope that by getting these back from you I can have even more information to help me focus on what we do well and what needs improvement. I would appreciate very much you taking the time to fill this out and return it to the school by December 2nd. I will report on the results in the next newsletter.

ART NEWS

"FROM CRAFTS TO CANVAS"

The talents of Adam Scott's amazing Art students will be on display at the K.P.R.D.S.B. office during the month of December. An eclectic mix of student art work, in a variety of media, will be showcased at the office on Fisher Drive. Students have been busy crafting drawings, paintings, prints, and 3-D sculptural works. Some of the pieces will be a sneak preview of the upcoming January AVI 4M1/0A0 show of media works to be held in downtown Peterborough. Keep your eyes open for posters announcing that gala opening.

Students Supporting Seniors

With a winter chill in the air, we were able to get another successful "Students Supporting Seniors" completed. November 5th was a perfect day for 66 of our senior students to help people in our community get their houses and yards ready for winter. There was lots of raking, pruning, raking, gardening and more raking as our students spent time with some of our 'mature' neighbors. While they did not receive any credit towards their required 40 hours of community involvement, our students all had a great time and their hosts enjoyed having company as well. Many of our hosts have called the school with kind words about individual students and to express their appreciation for jobs well done. Special thanks to Jennifer Lewis, co-op student in the Guidance office for the time and effort that she spent co-ordinating the program. Good Work Adam Scott!

"SACRIFICE BEFORE VICTORY"

Dieppe - 1942

Sincere thanks to the many students and staff members who assisted with the Remembrance Day assembly, held recently on Monday, November 11th, during which we honoured our Canadian service men and women. The theme was Sacrifice before Victory as highlighted in this year's 60th Anniversary of Dieppe.

Included in the docudrama was the sacrifice of a local hero, Reverend John Weir Foote (born 1904, in Madoc) who was the only member of the Canadian Chaplain Services ever to be awarded the Victoria Cross. In 1942, RHLI Padre Captain Foote, a Presbyterian minister, stoically moved through the carnage on White Beach, searching out the wounded, and carried many to a waiting craft. During the ordeal, he refused all offers to be evacuated. "My place is with my boys," he said. Almost 200 of his boys died on the beach that morning; 175 more were marched off, with Reverend Foote, to spend three wretched years in prisoner-of-war camps. He later made his home with his wife in Cobourg, until his death in 1988, and now lies in Union Cemetery.

The Dieppe raid was the first assault on the German western front and came at a time when the Allied forces were still reeling from unbroken Nazi victories in Europe. Allied generals wanted to test German defenses along the French coast and compel the Nazis to divert forces from the Russian front. They also wanted to gain experience for the full-scale invasion of France that would take place on D-Day, almost two years later.

While many historians agree that the Dieppe operation was successful on both counts, the price in blood was high - and paid mostly by Canadian soldiers.

In honour of those who served, survived, and sacrificed their lives, we extend our appreciation to those who made the assembly possible:
