PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Adam Scott is off and running for another year. Our school has once again established itself as a leader in many areas. Our Science Fair participants enjoyed success on the national stage with several medals and awards in Saskatoon. A list of the Science Awards of Merit appears on the following page. I am very proud of these students and know how much our community appreciates our school receiving the deserved praise. Congratulations to our Science Department staff for all their extra effort.

Our Grade 10 students are preparing for the Literacy Test on October 22nd and October 23rd. Please make sure your son and/or daughter is in attendance those days. Our results for last years test were amongst the highest in the Province and we continue to set very high standards for our students. Improvement of student learning is our number one priority here at Adam Scott.

We are also busy preparing our graduating students for this "double cohort" year. Assemblies have been held and college and university representatives will ensure that our students have all the information they need to make informed decisions about this very important year in their life.

It is very rewarding to see the high level of participation in after school activities. Our school bands are practicing hard, our football, basketball, rowing, soccer, cross-country, field hockey and volleyball teams are working every day with their coaches to be the best they can be. Girls rugby has been introduced this year and over 50 girls are quickly establishing Adam Scott as a force to be reckoned with.

Our Drama, History and Technical Departments are already hard at work preparing for our Remembrance Day assemblies.

These are just some of the activities that go on each and every day. For this, I thank our volunteer teacher/coaches for the enormous amount of time they put in after or before a very heavy workload in the classroom. We even have intramural activities every day at lunch!

Finally, I would like to thank our student leaders - Jeff Westlake is doing a great job with the student council. The student representatives and their staff advisors have a very busy year planned. Andrew Glynn, Jordana McDonald and Erika Faux are keeping everyone's school spirit up and Dana Johnston and Helen Dry are hoping to make our Terry Fox Run the most successful ever.

Keep up the good work, Adam Scott - together, we are a great school!

MUSICAL NOTES

The Adam Scott Junior Band, Scott Singers, Senior Band and several small ensembles are pleased to present "Fall Fiesta" on Wednesday, October 30th at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. This one hour concert will feature traditional marches, jazz, folk songs and an inspiring arrangement of songs from "Mamma Mia", for all you ABBA fans.

The Senior Concert Band is planning a trip to Montreal for next April. Fundraising activities will include "Citrus Sales" in November.

The grade nine and ten music classes are in full swing and for student's and parent's convenience, assignments and test dates are posted on the school's website. Students may sign out instruments every day after school and on the weekends. Remember - the way to becoming a better musician is to play, play, play!

TERRY FOX RUN

This year's Terry Fox Run is being held on Thursday, October 17 at Nichol's Oval. All of the high schools in Peterborough are participating -- raising money for innovative cancer research. To be eligible to participate in this event, a student must raise at least $20.00 in pledges and return the permission form signed by a parent or guardian. Students are encouraged to then take a blue pledge sheet and to raise as much money as possible. Adam Scott's goal this year is to raise $16,000.00. (Last year, we raised $14,000.00!) The timetable for this event is:

12:25 p.m. - students go to Per. 4 class

for attendance

12:30 p.m. - those eligible to go on the

run assemble on the front lawn of the

school with most of the teachers.

(the rest of the students and teachers

will assemble in the auditorium.)

12:35 - 1:00 p.m. - we walk, as a group,

to Nichol's Oval

1:00 - 2:15 p.m. - we walk, as a group,

around Nichol's Oval

2:15 p.m. - we walk, as a group, back

to Adam Scott for our regular dismissal

at 3:02 p.m.

Students are expected to stay with the group. No student cars may be taken to the park. No smoking is permitted at this event.

We thank all families and friends in advance for your support of this worthy cause.
