PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

As we head into the second half of Semester One, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their continuing dedication to the Adam Scott community. Our staff, teaching and non-teaching, each and every day strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. As a result, our school has an outstanding reputation not only in Peterborough, but throughout the province.

Final examinations will soon be upon us. I would remind families that January 21 and 23 are evaluation and assessment days where students will be performing a variety of summative tasks in their classroom which go towards calculating their final mark in the course. The final exams will be held on the following days:

January 25 - 9:00 a.m. - Period 1 classes

January 28 - 9:00 a.m. - Period 2 classes

January 29 - 9:00 a.m. - Period 3 classes

January 30 - 9:00 a.m. - Period 4 classes

Students must be in attendance on all of these days. Exceptions to this are only made in the event of a medical or family emergency.

In the case of school closure due to inclement weather, the affected exams will be written on

January 31st at 9:00 a.m.

The Adam Scott library provides links for different subject areas. It also has a list of all new books and videos in the library's collection. The school library web address is:

http://www2.kpr.edu.on.ca/acvi/library.htm

Adam Scott students have access to 500 full text magazines through the Internet. The site is called EPNET and can be accessed from the school web page or http://search.epnet.com/

Students who use this site have said it is the most useful site on the Internet. It can be used from home or school.

The Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB pays for students to use this site and students need to enter a login and password to access it. Students can get the login and password from the Adam Scott Library.

Students who want to do presentations using a computer (e.g. Powerpoint) can book a computer viewer from the Adam Scott Library. The viewer projects the computer image onto a large screen. It also has sound capabilities.

STUDENTS SUPPORTING SENIORS

One hundred and fourteen Adam Scott students volunteered their morning on Wednesday,

October 31st to help fifty-six local seniors by performing various tasks around their homes. Students raked lawns, washed windows and did some gardening for seniors who phoned the school last week requesting help from the Students Supporting Seniors program. Appreciative seniors treated many of the students to treats and warm drinks to stave off the cold, damp morning air. The company and conversation was mutually enjoyed. This successful program will be repeated in the spring season.

MUSICAL NOTES

The Period 1 music class has just started their major project of the year: writing and performing a musical. The 30 senior music students will write the script, compose music and lyrics to songs, act, sing, dance, create costumes, backdrops, lighting and sound for a fabulous musical. They will then perform for our local feeder schools. Stay tuned for more information.

The grade 9 music classes may approach you for an interview. As part of our curriculum, investigating Music in the Community, students will be interviewing people of all age groups about their musical knowledge, interests and attitudes. Thanks for taking part! As well, they should be busy practicing at home for their minor scale test, and duet/ensembles test.

Thanks to all the parents, friends and family of our band members for attending our first concert of the year. The groups all played fabulously well and we look forward to their next performance which is on Wednesday, December 12th at 7:30 p.m. The Christmas Concert will feature our Junior and Senior Bands, the Scott Singers and numerous small ensembles. Admission is free, but bring loonies and toonies for refreshments and our draw.

The music department has launched a web site with information about our classes, bands, and projects. Please log on to www.ascvibands.uni.cc for more information. If you have any questions regarding your daughter/son's musical education, please feel free to contact Ms. Gauthier at 743-7373 or at msgauthier_ascvi@yahoo.com
