CHARACTER EDUCATION ATTRIBUTE OF THE MONTH: COURAGE
- MS. JOHNSTON
Adam Scott Intermediate School continues to rock along this month.
The Skilled Trades Day was a great success with many winning designs in the tinfoil boat competition, amazing designs in the tree house session, extraordinarily large geodomes made of newsprint and straw towers which stretched the students design skills. Thanks to Mr. Colling and Mrs. Findlay for their leadership and to all the teachers who helped supervise.
Adam Scott Intermediate students joined in with the high school for a very effective and meaningful Remembrance Day assembly. Twelve of our students were involved in a play which illustrated for the audience the real horrors of war. This play was written and produced by a grade 12 drama class and was set in Afghanistan. Also, our students were introduced to some of our local war veterans who we honored at the assembly.
Tardiness has been an issue since the beginning of school for many students. It is imperative that all students are in their classroom, prepared and ready to work when the bell rings at 8:50 am. Students who continue to be late will have to make up time with Mrs. Johnston. Please talk to your son or daughter about the importance and respectfulness of being on time and prepared.
Horseplay continues to be a concern on the school yard during recess. At 12 and 13 years old, boys and girls are full of energy and fun, and having a recess is important. When horseplay starts however, it usually concludes with someone inadvertently getting hurt. Please review with your child the need to be safe during play time. (No play fighting, jumping on each others backs, tackling etc...) There are balls and frisbees for students to borrow at recess.
What does it mean to be a good Audience?
The whole school has now participated in 3 large presentations (Dying to be Thin, Remembrance Day Assembly, The Little Prince.) We have reviewed with our students what it means to be an effective respectful audience for a live performance. They are much more used to movies and tv where audience participation is not necessary.
We’ve discussed such things as:
• actors depend on your attention and participation (laughing at the right time) to keep the play’s momentum.
• audience noise can distract and take away from the drama and the actor’s ability to act.
• your noise affects others ability to hear.
• you can not leave to go to the bathroom any time you like. Two hundred people taking personal bathroom breaks will stop the actor’s ability to hold the mood and tell the story.
We have had mixed success as a truly quiet and respectfully engaged audience and I am asking that you take some time at home to discuss the recent plays we’ve gone to and how students could have improved their behaviour, even if the play is not as interesting to them as they had hoped!!
Again, a reminder that the weather is changing. Please, make sure your child has appropriate outdoor clothing as we generally go out no matter the weather.

NEW PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board recognizes the increasingly important role that communication and telecommunication technologies play in the lives of our students, parents and employees. In response to input received from parents and schools, the Board has drafted a new Personal Electronic Devices (PED) Policy with the aim of improving student achievement, increasing school safety, protecting individual privacy and promoting character development. Policies guide the Board’s actions and decisions. As part of the process of introducing
new policies, we often seek input from a variety of sources, including parents and guardians. In this case, we are asking parents and guardians for their input. The draft policy and additional supplementary materials can be found on the Board’s website, together with an electronic feedback form. We ask that you review the draft policy at your convenience and complete the feedback form electronically by December 17, 2007. Simply visit the Board website at www.kprschools.ca and follow the front page link.
If you wish to receive hard copies of the policy and feedback form, you may download the documents from the website, or please contact me at the school. Feedback received will be considered, collated and presented in a report to the February 12, 2007 Program Review Committee Meeting. We invite all points of view and truly value your perspective. Thank you in advance for your time and participation.
MUSIC NEWS
All intermediate students have the opportunity to go to Toronto to see the musical "We Will Rock You", Wednesday, December 12th. We are going for the amazing price of $33 a student. Students will need to dress appropriately, bring a lunch and a snack with them. Parent volunteers pay $20. If your son or daughter has not brought a permission form home for this, and are wanting to attend, please have them see me at school for another form! The money and forms are due November 19!! It would be a shame to miss out on this great experience!
The musical "Crazy for You" is well underway now. It is exciting to hear and watch it evolve every week. Many of our intermediate students are involved in this production. Please continue to check the schedule online for rehearsal updates. The performance dates are posted online as well as ticket prices. Please check Mr. Bemrose's link from www.adamscott.ca for rehearsal times, performance dates, ticket prices and any other information you may be wanting to know about "Crazy for You".
The grade eight band is still hard at work. Thank you to all parents who are driving all Wednesday and Friday morning rehearsals. (I know that it's early!) Volleyball intramurals will begin soon.
VOLLEYBALL
Keep your eyes and ears open for Volleyball team tryouts in the first week of December. Practices will vary from day to day and before and after school, as well as lunch, as we share the facilities with the high school. Students must be able to make a commitment that is flexible if they wish to try out. There will be two competitive and two recreational teams, as well as two mixed teams. Tournaments are at the end of January and early February. Coaches will be Mrs. Findlay: boys competitive, Mrs. Knox: girls competitive, Mr. Colling: boys and girls recreational. Come and try out and join the fun!!
