CHARACTER EDUCATION ATTRIBUTE OF THE MONTH: FAIRNESS
- MS. JOHNSTON
The school year is well and truly off and running. The activities and learning happening in our classrooms are awesome.
Upcoming activities include students seeing a play called “Dying to Be Thin” which is a play written for intermediate age students and examines and informs students about the perils and complexity of eating disorders. This will take place at Adam Scott on October 23 at 1:30 pm.
We will also be traveling as an entire Intermediate School to see the play “The Little Prince” at Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School on November 2. Stay tuned for more information coming home soon. Though the production will be in English it is a great opportunity to explore this very famous french piece of literature.
Some reminders and other general information:
• The weather is changing. Please make sure your child is coming to school with outdoor clothing appropriate for our outside breaks. It is getting cold out there.
• Our kids are growing like weeds!! Please make sure they are bringing enough food to school to fuel their brains and bodies for the day.
• Make sure your child is bringing home his or her agenda each day and using it as an organizational tool.
• There will be a “Green Market” set up at the school soon so students and families can donate and receive winter outdoor clothing (hats, mitts, jackets ...) that are in good condition and current style. The drop off date for any gently used clothing you may have cluttering your closets is this Wed., Oct.17 at 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the foyer. The Green Market will be open for business sometime the following week. Stay tuned for details.
GRADE 8 BOYS TRIP TO CAMP KAWARTHA
On Wednesday October 3, the grade eight boys from Mr. Colling’s class set out for a two day trip to Camp Kawartha. The boys spent two days participating in various team building activities. Some of the activities the boys took on included a 50 ft wall climb course, a high ropes course, and a survival game. The activities were specifically designed to build team skills and trust within the class. Many of the activities forced the boys to go way outside their comfort level. Also, all of the boys were given certain duties throughout the trip like doing the dishes, setting up and putting away dishes, as well as regular cleanups. Overall, the trip was a great success!
ADAM SCOTT INTERMEDIATE SKILLS TRADE DAY
On Monday November 5th, the students in grades 7 and 8 will have the opportunity to participate in various hands-on activities that are directly related to specific work trades. The central focus of this theme day is to inform our students about the vast opportunities available within the skilled trade’s technologies. Some of the hands-on activities that the students will be engaged in will include building a gigantic geodesic dome with newsprint, building a straw tower, building a tinfoil boat, as well as building a massive Popsicle stick tree house. Students will be working in teams attempting to complete the challenges in a set time. For more information about National Skilled Trade’s Day in Canada log onto skillscanada.com.
MUSIC NEWS
The GRADE 8 BAND is off to a great start. We have over 40 students involved and practise every Wednesday and Friday morning 7:30-8:30. The students are excited to play music such as selections from Grease, Mission Impossible, Harry Potter and more! We are preparing to put on a concert for early December. Keep posted for this upcoming date. Other playing opportunities this year will include playing at Fairhaven, R.F. Downey, Edmison Heights, Kiwanis music festival, and Canada's Wonderland.
The musical CRAZY FOR YOU is in full swing! Many of the intermediate students are involved in the cast of the musical. Practices are posted online under Mr. Bemrose and all participants will receive a schedule for upcoming rehearsal times. Crazy for You will be performed in February in time for Valentine’s Day.
ART CLUB
- Ms. Harding
Our Adam Scott Art Club started up several weeks ago, with great student interest. We get together Tuesdays at lunch in the Art Room to discuss and experiment with various techniques and media, examine art works, and just enjoy making art. Past Tuesdays have seen us sketching outside, using charcoal pencil to create depth and texture in spooky images, and painting.
New members are welcome - bring your lunch and your ideas!
TERRY FOX RUN
Thursday, October 12, 2007
- Ms. Harding
What an amazing day! After gloomy weather reports predicting rain and more rain, the afternoon turned glorious, as almost our entire intermediate student body trekked off to Nicholls Oval. Our Adam Scott students joined the throngs from all around Peterborough in this celebration of the spirit of Terry Fox.
Terry’s message of hope has touched us all. As we walked and ran the Oval’s wide track, around and around, we saw how the words and life of this “ordinary” young man continue to inspire young people even now.
Our thanks to all parents and community members who encouraged our students and helped make this important fundraising effort so successful this year - over $2700 was collected to contribute to research into the many faces of cancer.
Thanks too, to our students, who made this day one to remember.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
- Ms. Harding
The Adam Scott School Council held its first meeting of the year on Mon., Sept. 17. We welcomed both new and familiar faces around the Library seminar room tables. Our chair for the year will be Sharron Hatton; serving as secretary is Joy Olson, and as Treasurer, Monte Smith.
The Council works as a place where we share ideas and information related to the whole school, both intermediate and secondary - everything from Adam Scott’s efforts in encouraging boys to read (see Boysread.com) to the latest news in secondary course development, to the date and theme of the next school dance or fundraiser.
Meetings are held at 6:45 p.m.on the third Monday of each month of the school year, in the Adam Scott Library. Please come join us - new members are very welcome!

LET’S TALK ABOUT BOOKS
Dear Adam Scott Families,
Welcome back to another great reading year! Naturally, there’s a lot going on here at Adam Scott other than reading but for those of you that know me already, I have a thing for reading. Also, during our last PD Day, the teachers decided to make reading an all-school focus for this year and set some SMART goals for their classroom that reflect students’ needs in this area. We looked closely at our data from the recent CASI assessment to help us set these goals.
As Literacy Coach here at Adam Scott Intermediate, I like to begin the year exploring new books that may have come out over the summer. I enjoy reading new Young Adult novels and try to help teachers help their students find “just the right book”. We often take surveys of our classes to get a sense of where students’ interests are. For example, in one of our classes an overwhelming number of students are interested in reading Science Fiction. In another, the students prefer to read non-fiction materials such as fact books and magazines. It’s nice to honour what our students enjoy and make connections to their lives when we teach.
I have just finished reading a heart-wrenching novel called The Book Thief (Mark Zusak), which takes place during the Holocaust and is written from Death’s perspective about a young girl living in Germany at the time. It is a fascinating look at the impact that words have on our lives. I would recommend this book to students who are passionate about reading and don’t mind descriptive passages and a slightly obtuse writing style.
How can you help your child at home? My recommendation this month is to talk with your child about a favorite book. Tell them about the book that maybe got you started as a reader. Share your experience as an adult reader by pointing out ways in which reading has been important in your life. Provide time each night for a little reading.
Happy Reading!

OSHAWA SKI CLUB
To all parents/guardians and students interested in the Adam Scott Wednesday Night Ski Club at the Oshawa Ski Club:
Group registration and pricing information is coming your way very soon. Prices are good but, depend on the number of students participating. Thirty plus students would be ideal to decrease the cost involved. Stay tuned and have your son or daughter pick up the application from Mme. Ilkiewicz.
SOCCER
Adam Scott had over 85 students try out for Intermediate soccer this year. The finalized roster consists of two co-ed teams, each with 17 players chosen to represent our school. Adam Scott will compete in a culminating tournament on October 15th at Beavermead Park. Each team worked hard preparing with their coaches for the past five weeks. Mrs Findlay and Mr Borek have been coaching the teams and are extremely pleased with our athletes commitment and enthusiasm to the sport. Mr. Borek’s team worked hard and received a bronze medal. Well done! Mrs. Findlay’s team made a fabulous effort, played hard all day, and placed 4th in their division. Good job team!
