MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

April has arrived and it is hard to believe we are into our third term.

We need to remind and support students as they continue to put forth their best efforts in all subjects during this final term. As grade 7 students prepare for grade 8 expectations, our grade 8 students are preparing for high school. Grade 8 students have already selected courses for next year and hopefully have had all their questions answered. If you have a son or daughter going into grade 9 next year and still have concerns, please contact the school so we can address your needs.

Second term ended with some very positive events. Student Council and our spirit group (Department of Way Cool Stuff) organized a very successful second dance for our students. We sent four Student Council representatives Racheal Potts, Cheryl Copson, Chance Faulkner and Liz Caley with Ms. Scott to the Board's Character Education Conference. The ideas they've brought back will start to be implemented this term as we get our Character Education Initiative going at the Intermediate level. Our Character Education Initiative was formally kicked off with an entire school presentation by Conrad Leinemann, a Canadian Olympic Beach Volleyball player who talked about character education attributes while he proceeded to single handedly beat our student and teacher teams.

Earlier this week, Mme. Girard and some of our intermediate students went with our high school counter parts to participate in the Regional Science Fair. Our students did a great job representing us at Trent University and had a wonderful day. You will get an opportunity to see these projects at our Open House on April 27th. Our History Fair Projects are also in full gear as students are working on history assignments that will also be displayed during our Open House.

On April 27th, we will be having an Open House to give our students an opportunity to display their work in a number of subject areas. Those areas are: History Fair Projects, Science Fair Projects, Art Projects and Our Music Programme.

Our School Council will also be running our Krispy Kream donut fund raiser that night as well. Further details are enclosed in the newsletter.

We are continuing to encourage students to organize homework and assignment due dates using their agenda planners. If students need to change a deadline they should conference with their teachers well in advance of the due dates. For simplicity's sake, when a student has not handed in a major assignment and prior to the due date has not dialogued with a teacher about alternate due dates, he or she will be penalized 5% of the mark per day up to 5 days. After five days the assignment will be given a grade of zero. For the majority of our students late assignments will not be an issue, but for the few who struggle to meet the expectations in this area a concrete outline of consequences was needed. Please discuss this policy with your child and clarify that working through deadline issues with teachers prior to due dates in a mutually respectful negotiation will always be the preferred approach and best practice. With the correct planning no-one should be losing marks for late assignments.

Information sessions about the grade 6 to grade 7 transition are going to be held at our two main feeder schools. Mr. Gray will be going to R.F. Downey to meet with our new grade 7 students and their parents in May. More detailed information from these schools will be sent home via the grade 6 students at each school. All of the grade 6 students will be invited to our Open House the afternoon of April 27th.

A reminder to all parents that our next School Council meeting is April 20th at 6:45 p.m. in the library. We would like to thank our current School Council members for their hard work so far this year and encourage anyone who would like to be involved to join us at the next meeting.

Ms. Hanz, our former Vice Principal who retired last January is enjoying her retirement spending time with family and friends. Special welcome to Mr. Karl Wunderlich, our new Vice Principal. Mr. Wunderlich comes to us from Clarke High School where he was Facilitator of the Global Issues Department. Mr. Wunderlich is very pleased to be at Adam Scott and we are delighted to have him as part of our leadership team. Mr. Wunderlich will look after students in grades 10 - 12 while Vice Principal, Mr. Gray will continue with grades 7, 8 and 9.

HISTORICA FAIR

"A Celebration of Our Canadian Heritage"

Adam Scott is pleased to be participating this year in our first Historica Fair. This is an event that has been taking place across Canada for several years and involves thousands of students. It is an educational initiative that provides an opportunity for students to explore any aspect of Canadian heritage, history or geography in a dynamic and captivating learning environment. They are invited to tell personal family stories as well as more general ones. The project's relevance to curriculum is multi-faceted, as it may include Language, History, Geography, Art, Music, Science or even Physical Education. Students may use a medium of their choice to share information and to tell stories about Canadian heroes and legends, milestones and achievements and then present the results of their research at a public exhibition.

After our school fair, several of our students will be asked to bring their projects to a local exhibition involving three schools at the opening of the Canadian Canoe Museum at the beginning of May; one student from Adam Scott will be invited to participate at the Kingston Regional Fair, and may be chosen to attend the National Fair in July. This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to interact with others who have an interest in heritage.

Currently, students are progressing through their research processes, developing good questions, accessing resources and considering their method of presentation. They are encouraged to enhance their book and Internet research with visits to local museums (e.g. Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives at 300 Hunter St. E., the Liftlock Centre next to the Liftlocks on Hunter St. E., etc.) and with personal interviews where appropriate.

The fair will occur on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 27. There will then be an evening showcase of the Historica Fair Projects, Science Fair Entries and band presentations from 6:30 - 8.

For further information on Historica, visit the website at http://www.histori.ca. You will see ideas, rules and regulations, and lots of interesting historical information.

Congratulations to Jonathan McKee, 8A, this month's draw winner.

Our newsletter contest continues.

Please sign and return this portion of the newsletter to the school to indicate you received and read this newsletter. Your child's name will be entered into a draw for a prize. Return by Wednesday, April 14, 2004.
