MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

During the previous month, our Principal, Catherine Foy, was ill but still working hard to do her best for the school. As of April 1st , Catherine was granted a medical leave and for the interim, I have been named Acting Principal. Bob Fenton, has come out of retirement to assume my Vice-Principal duties during this time. Bob is a former Adam Scott Vice-Principal and we are looking forward to the contributions his experience will bring to our school. We all wish Catherine a speedy recovery and any cards or well wishes can be sent to the office, where they will be forwarded to her.

It is hard to believe we are headed into May and we have had a lot of great activities over the past month! Historica was wonderful and many members of the community came in to help us make the choices for the projects going onto the regional fair on April 28th. Retired teachers Catherine Dibben and Phil Winslow, Anne Scott, Mary Heaman, Student Council Chair Sharron Hatton, History Dept. Chair Pierre Robert and a couple of other important judges; had a very difficult time selecting top projects since all the students put a lot of effort and enthusiasm into their work. CHEX TV was on the scene again this year to highlite the students’ projects and Trustee Sue Cushing helped out with the awards ceremony. Our top 10 projects are going to participate in the Regional Historica Fair at the Peterborough Canoe Museum on April 28th. All the school results are further on in the newsletter. Thank you to all staff for their hard work to keep Historica on track and Dorothy McCord for all her efforts in organizing the event.

An exciting basketball season is winding down. Both girls’ and boys’ teams have played with enthusiasm and developed their skills considerably. Thanks to teachers Jenn Knox and Danielle Vlietstra for their dedication to both teams throughout the season. Track and Field members have already started their training with the High School Team. Adam Scott will be hosting the Intermediate Track and Field meet later on during the month of May; more details to follow.

Fund raising activities are still going on! Our annual Plant Sale is currently happening with order forms being sent home last Friday, April 22nd. If for some reason the form did not make it home please contact the main office and we will send home another form. This is one of our important fund raisers and plant pick is just prior to the May long weekend.

During the month of May, I have plans to visit all our feeder schools to talk to our “new” grade seven students and their parents. As usual, our BBQ for new Intermediate students will be taking place on Thursday, June 2nd starting at 4:30 pm. More details are included later in the newsletter.

Graduation will be occurring on Monday, June 27th and already the students are discussing what they are going to wear for their graduation ceremony and dance. The excitement for the elementary ceremony is understandable but some students are concerned about the quality of their attire and whether or not they will “fit in” with the social expectations for the evening. Please take some time to talk with your child(ren) about the realities of dressing appropriately for a school event and the judicious spending of money on outfits. Reviewing with all students that people come from a variety of situations and should not be judged on their physical appearance or attire may help to encourage inclusion and group support for each and every person who is graduating. This is a special day for all our children.

Lastly, with the good weather, we are starting to see more skateboards at school. Students are reminded that skateboards are not allowed at school for safety reasons and need to be left at home.

A reminder to parents and guardians to check our website www.adamscott.ca to keep up with the multitude of activities and events here at the school. As always, we appreciate your support and input. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Wilf_Gray@kprdsb.ca or at 743-7373 Ext. 143.

Historica Fair - 2005

Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2005 Historica Fair at Adam Scott. Many projects reflected careful attention to researching some very interesting topics. On April 14th, selected projects were reviewed by 6 judges in the cafeteria. On April 15th, students and parents had an opportunity to visit displays in classrooms. An awards ceremony followed, with Sue Cushing, trustee of the KPRDSB assisting in presenting awards.

Many thanks to judges Kim Reid, Phil Winslow, Catherine Dibben, Anna Scott, Sharron Hatton, Mary Heaman, Pierre Robert and Wilf Gray. Thanks also to Bravo Awards who subsidized the plaques which were presented to the first place students.

The first ten projects listed below will be attending the Kawartha Lakeshore Regional Fair at the Canadian Canoe Museum on April 28th, and will have a chance to be chosen to proceed to the provincial fair in Hamilton and the national fair in Saskatoon.

WELCOMING BARBECUE

Each Spring we hold a barbecue to welcome the new Grade 7 students (fall 2005) into our School Community. Information sessions about the Grade 6 to Grade 7 transition are going to be held at this year’s Welcoming Open House and Barbecue here, at Adam Scott. Grade 6 students attending our feeder schools along with our current grade 7 students will be invited to this event. This B.B.Q. will allow the new students and their families to meet and greet our grade 7 students in a relaxed atmosphere. A tour of the school’s facilities will take place after the B.B.Q.

This year the Barbecue will take place on Thursday, June 2nd between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. A form will be attached to this Newsletter asking you how many people will be attending. The cost will be set at $5.00 per family. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Tim Bits and Milk will be available. Please fill out the form and return it by Wednesday, May 25th .
