HISTORICA FAIR
“A Celebration of Our Canadian Heritage”
Adam Scott is pleased to be participating this year in our second Historica Fair. This is an event that has been taking place across Canada for several years and that involves thousands of students. It is an educational initiative that provides an opportunity for students to explore any aspect of Canadian heritage, history or geography in a dynamic and captivating learning environment. They are invited to tell personal family stories as well as more general ones. The project’s relevance to curriculum is multi-faceted, as it may include Language, History, Geography, Art, Music, Science or even Physical Education. Students may use a medium of their choice to share information and to tell stories about Canadian heroes and legends, milestones and achievements and then present the results of their research at a public exhibition.
There will be classroom presentations and displays, and the top five projects from each class will set up a special display in the upper cafeteria. These projects will be judged by community members and teachers, and several of these will be chosen to proceed to a regional fair at the Canadian Canoe Museum, where they will take part in seminars and workshops with students from other schools. Following the regional fair, there is a Provincial Fair which will be held in Hamilton this year. One student from the provincial fair will be selected to go to the national fair in Saskatoon in the summer. This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to interact with others who have an interest in heritage.
Students are just beginning their research processes, brainstorming for topics, developing good questions, accessing resources and considering their method of presentation. They are encouraged to enhance their book and Internet research with visits to local museums (e.g. Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives at 300 Hunter St. E., the Liftlock Centre next to the Liftlocks on Hunter St. E., etc.) and with personal interviews where appropriate. They need to keep all of their research in one folder, and bring it to their Library classes each week. Some time will be given in Library periods, and may also be given in home room classes. They will need to do some at home as well. Display boards may be purchased for approximately $1.15 each. This will be confirmed at a later date.
The fair will occur on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, April 14. The evening open house will provide an opportunity to see Historica Fair Projects, Science Fair Entries and band presentations.
