CHARACTER EDUCATION ATTRIBUTE OF THE MONTH: INITIATIVE
Welcome back to school and to winter! Cold weather is finally upon us so please make sure that kids are warmly dressed as outdoor recess is part of our daily routine.
The high school examination period will begin on January 25th so the cafeteria will be closed between January 25th and February 5th when semester 2 begins. Students must bring their own lunch and snacks to school for this period of time.
Question of the month:
What types of extra-curricular activities would you like to see your child involved in? Send responses to karin_mackenzierussell@kprdsb.ca.
VOLLEYBALL!!
There were over 90 students who tried out for the volleyball teams – well done Adam Scott! With so much interest, Mrs. Knox decided to create four teams so that we could have 2 competitive and 2 recreational teams. Congratulations to the following students and good luck in your tournaments.
Tournament dates and locations are:
Jan. 30 – Boys Recreational at Lakefield
Jan. 31 – Boys Competitive at Lakefield
Jan. 31 – Girls Recreational at Adam Scott
Feb. 1 – Girls Competitive at Adam Scott
A big thank you goes out to Madame Dalton, a high school teacher who volunteered to coach the girls competitive team – Merci Madame Dalton!
CANWEST CANSPELL NATIONAL SPELLING BEE 2007
This national spelling contest is now in its third year. At the regional level, it offers the following prizes: all expenses paid for the winner and chaperone to attend the National Spelling Bee Finals in Ottawa and the 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., plus a $3 000 Registered Education Savings Plan.
Adam Scott Intermediate will have a school spelling bee Thursday, January 25, at lunch. Our winner will move on to the district level contest, a written spelling contest. This determines who will attend the regional level spelling bee. Students have already met to discuss the study guide, procedures, rules, prospective words, and strategies, during the first week back at school.
Other students who may be interested in taking part in this opportunity are welcome to get a copy of the “Spell It!” Study Guide from Mme Harding, which details a number of prospective words for the bee. Check www.canspell.com and www.spellingbee.com for daily words, games, and study tips. Students are invited to study independently or with a friend in Room 110 on Mondays or Tuesdays, and on Thursday, Jan. 18, in the Art Room.
HISTORICA CLUB
Historica Fairs have been growing by leaps and bounds in the last few years - more than 350 000 people participated in the Fairs last year. The Historica Foundation behind the Fairs is a charitable organization, focused on engaging us in the history of our country. It runs three educational programs and three support resources. About five years ago, it launched the Canadian website www.histori.ca. This site offers easy access to the Canadian Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia of Music in Canada, “History by the Minute” (including Historica Minutes, as seen on TV, Historica Radio Minutes, and the Footprints sports series), This Day in History, Screen Legends, Youthlinks (a place to express opinions on a wide variety of issues, geared particularly to secondary level students), student games, the “Tattoo a Moose” programme, and most importantly for us, Historica Fairs. Under Historica Fairs, you will find rules and criteria, guidelines and resources, and many examples of student work.
The Historica Foundation provides special awards for each Regional Fair: The Honourable Laurier L. LaPierre, O.C. Medal, for enthusiasm and dedication to Canadian history and heritage; the HBC Explorers Award, for demonstrating an aspect of exploration that has influenced Canadian history; the RBC Foundation Award for the Celebration of Aboriginal Heritage, for celebrating an aspect of Aboriginal history, heritage, or culture; the CN Veterans Award, for celebrating veterans and their contribution to Canadian history; the Ontario Trillium Foundation Award of Excellence, for presenting Ontario history, heritage, or culture; and the Archives of Ontario Award for best use of original records related to Ontario history.
Currently, six students are meeting regularly with Mme Harding to prepare research projects for this year’s Kawartha Lakeshore Regional Fair in Orono, Friday, May 4. Most have chosen a topic and are checking that there are sufficient sources of information to proceed. Our next step is to develop “thick” questions to guide our research. New members are welcome!
PUBLIC SPEAKING
The Lions Club Public Speaking Contest is fast approaching! Participants must be registered for the Feb. 17 speak-off by February 2. Our Adam Scott group meets Mondays at lunch in Mme Harding’s room to share ideas and feedback. Members will bring their completed drafts to the meeting on Jan. 22, and then revise their work for Jan. 29. February meetings will focus on delivery (expression, pace, projection, posture, etc.). Wish us good luck!
EASY ACCESS TO BUS CANCELLATION INFORMATION @ WWW.STSCO.CA
Students, parents and guardians have quick, easy access to information on school bus delays and cancellations at www.stsco.ca
“With the delayed but inevitable return of winter weather, we know that parents and students are eager to learn the status of school bus routes each morning,” notes Joel Sloggett, chief executive officer of Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario. STSCO is the consortium responsible for busing elementary and secondary students from the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.
“In addition to listening to local radio stations, students and parents can visit www.stsco.ca and click on the yellow school bus icon for immediate access to information on school bus delays and cancellations,” he adds. “We have sent letters home with students from all schools, reminding them of the website. We know that use of the website was quite heavy this morning.”
STSCO also has a 24-hour information line, available at 705-748-9240 or toll-free at 1-866-433-4441. “Region-wide cancellations are announced on this line,” he adds. “As we have close to 700 bus routes system-wide, however, we can not include each affected route on the telephone hotline. For more detailed, route-by-route information, we encourage people to visit the STSCO website or to listen to their local radio stations.”
