Superintendent of Student Achievement - W.R. Hick
Trustees: Rose Kitney, Diane Lloyd, Roy Wilfong
Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. has a focus on student achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines. This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a climate which is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.
LEAVING ADAM SCOTT
Effective the start of the second semester (February 6th ), Mr. Wunderlich will be leaving to assume the job of Vice Principal at Courtice Secondary School. He had primary responsibility for the secondary school. His replacement will be Mr. Bill Mitchell who is currently Vice Principal at Norwood District High School. Effective January 31st , Mr. Fenton will re-retire as pension regulations limit the number of days a retiree may work each year. As of this writing, no replacement has been named. A search is presently underway for an experienced intermediate administrator.
Mr. Fenton wishes to express his thanks and gratitude to staff, students and parents for their past support. He has enjoyed Adam Scott and is truly sad to leave.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Our Intermediate Public Speaking Group has been meeting regularly since early December to prepare for the Legion and Lion’s Club events. Three of our students will be attending the Peterborough Lion’s Club Effective Speaking Contest on February 11th: Madeleine Brown, speaking on spelling bees; Katelyn Franko, on goldmining; and Harrison Perkins, on pioneer life in the Peterborough area.
The Peterborough branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will host its contest on March 5th. We would like to thank all those students who have participated in our group for their hard work and enthusiasm!
KIDS ROCK AT CHRISTMAS DANCE
On the last afternoon of school before holidays, Intermediate students celebrated the end of classes with a gigantic Winter Holiday/Christmas Video Dance in the gym. The student council organized the event from start to finish and did their usual spectacular job.
Mrs. Knox conducted some dance classes in the days leading up to the event and students learned the moves for several popular dances. The results were impressive as the place was rocking. It was a terrific way to begin the Christmas break.
ANTI TEASING/BULLYING PROGRAM
As part of our ongoing program to deal with student teasing and bullying, we’ll be holding a special assembly Tuesday afternoon on February 7th. A group of basketball players who call themselves “The Half Pints” will play a select staff team..... this is bound to be humiliating. While they teach the staff a thing or two about basketball, “the Half Pints” will be presenting a mini-show on the topics of teasing and bullying.
Students and teachers will discuss these issues prior to the event and consider ways to reduce this occurrence in our school. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with “The Half Pint” players and ask questions. This program comes well recommended and we are looking forward to a great experience.
VOLLEYBALL TEAMS
The following girls and boys are on the Competitive Volleyball Teams. Mrs. Knox will accompany the teams to their tournaments on January 30th at Adam Scott (girls) and February 2nd at Lakefield High School (boys). Good luck teams!
Mr. Fenton kindly coached the Girls Recreational Team at 7:15 a.m. each week! Good luck at your tournament on January 31st at Kenner!
There will also be a mixed volleyball tournament later in February at Crestwood - team members names to be announced!
INTRAMURALS
Student interest has been very high for Badminton Intramurals! The Athletic Council has been actively assisting Mrs. Knox with intramural set up, officiating, and organizing - well done!
K.P.R. QUICK HITS
This is a very large and interesting Board of Education, Did You Know That?...
• K.P.R. has 85 elementary schools, 18 secondary schools and 6 adult learning centres.
• Approximately 25,000 students are bused daily on about 500 different bus routes.
• more than 4,000 volunteers assist in our schools.
• the Board ratio for computers to students is 5:1.
• as an optional program, the Board offers the Ojibwa language in 6 schools to both Native and non-native students.
• the area of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board covers 7,000 square kilometers.
• our Board is served by 11 Trustees including a Trustee representing 3 area First Nations communities as well as a student trustee.
WHAT HAPPENS IN ROOM 120 AT LUNCH!!
The Student Council has planned lots of stuff for the New Year. We have a school newspaper started for anyone who is interested in writing a column. They meet every Friday at lunch. The Girls’ Club will be starting soon. Listen to announcements for further details.
The Student Council passed a resolution to request permission from staff so that students could sit together at lunch as opposed to sitting in classes. Co-Prez Jen made a presentation at a staff meeting so that students can now sit together with friends.
We are planning a Valentine’s Day Dance. We are selling Candy Grams the week before Valentine’s Day. The Student Council is helping to organize a Ski Day at Devil’s Elbow. It will be held on February 24th. The Student Council has invited a group of midgets called the Half Pints to come and discuss with us the effects of bullying. They will be coming on February 7th.
Future plans under consideration include holding a “Spring Fling” and running a charity fundraiser. As you can see, the Student Council has a lot on its plate and we’re doing our best to accomplish things on behalf of students.

HISTORICA
The Regional Fair will be held April 28th at Alderville First Nation in Roseneath with storytelling, Native drumming, and singing events. Currently, our Historica Club is now using the computer lab for research - on topics from historic Peterborough streets to tinsmithing. We meet every Wednesday in room 110. New members are welcome!
CHRISTMAS DOOR DECORATION CONTEST
The great Christmas Door Contest was held the last week of school before the Christmas break. Students worked hard at lunch and after school and were very creative. Mr. Allan and Ms. Soucie agreed to judge the event; they chose Mr. Melchionna’s class as the winner. The big prize was a pizza lunch and it was provided by the Student Council. In fact, the doors were so well done that our judges chose a second winner, Room 108 (the art room) and Mr. Allan provided the prize for that group. It was a good effort by all classes and the halls were certainly festive.
WINTER ACTIVITIES DAY
February 24th will be our Winter Activity Day with special activities offered at both Devil’s Elbow and our school. School events include Science Challenge Activities and a Canadian Historical Mystery Tour.
Skiing and snowboarding permission forms will be distributed February 6 to 8. Please ensure that your student returns the forms, signed and dated, to his/her homeroom teacher no later than February 14th. Parent volunteers are most welcome. Please remember that the KPR school board requires a police check for parent volunteers; contact your homeroom teacher for more information.
We are looking forward to an awesome day!
STUDENTS LEARN FIRST HAND ABOUT AFGHANISTAN
On December 16th a special assembly was held for Intermediate students with Captain Michael Fenton of the Royal Canadian Regiment. Captain Fenton, who is stationed in Camp Petawawa, recently returned from a tour of duty in Kabul. He is an infantry officer who commands a squadron of light armoured vehicles.
Students learned about the geography, people and political situation of Afghanistan. Canada’s role as a helping nation was discussed and students were highly interested in the slide show. One of the big lessons learned was that we are fortunate indeed to live in this great country.
Students asked good questions and Captain Fenton was certainly impressed by his visit at Adam Scott. He returns to Afghanistan this coming August; students wished him well.
ASIS CONCERT BAND 2006
Welcome to Grade 7&8 students who have begun Concert Band this year! We have started rehearsals, but there may be students who did not get their name on the sign-up list who would still like to join. If so, please come to our next morning rehearsal. (Wed. & Fri 7:30-8:30) We are planning to go to Rock n’Bowl (Bowlerama) for a social gathering next week on Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 . Students will receive a notice with details at Wednesday’s rehearsal. Our plans for performance depend on how much repertoire the students are able to generate in the next few months. If they are keen and practise the music at home, we will be able to plan more performances. A regular event for our ASIS Bands is participation at the Wonderland Music Festival in early May. The grade 7’s will be somewhat intimidated by the music at first, but they are already catching on quickly! There will be
opportunities to feature Grade 8 soloists in our repertoire this year. We are off to a great start.
Thanks to the Ontario Arts Council for sponsoring Rick Fines, local Blues Musician and Canadian Blues Legend in our school during the two weeks prior to the Winter holidays. Students were introduced to the Blues through song, with musical stylings provided by Rick. We had an opportunity to begin the 12 bar blues on our band instruments and a glimpse of song writing techniques with the use of metaphor. Some of the best student examples were as follows;
“The only flaw for a recipe for love is a broken heart” -
“A decafinated conversation is a cure for insomnia”
“Mohammed Ali is an avalance taking on one mountain at a time”
“Fear is a shadow that covers us” -
“Mohammed Ali’s fame brought an avalanche of money and responsibiity”
ANNIE
From the Directors of “Annie” and Adam Scott Intermediate Staff - Thanks to the cast and crew of our Intermediate Students who gave of their heart and soul
for an amazing Musical production in December! You brought down the house every night! A special thank you to Jennifer Dick and Shelby Coulson whose names were inadvertently left off the program.
SPECIAL EDUCATION INFORMATION EVENING
There will be a Special Education information evening for parents on Wednesday, February 1st at 7 p.m. at Crestwood S.S. The evening will have a plenary session of about 10 minutes giving an overview followed by a choice of carousels. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to gather additional information about special education whether they are new to the field or wishing to further their knowledge.
