PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
During the past while, our Principal, Catherine Foy, was ill but still working hard to do her best for the school. As of April 1st, Catherine has been granted a medical leave and for the interim, I have been named Acting Principal. Bob Fenton has come out of retirement to assume my Vice-Principal duties during this time. Bob is a former Adam Scott Vice-Principal and we are looking forward to the contributions his experience will bring to our school. We all wish Catherine a speedy recovery and any cards or well wishes can be sent to the office, where they will be forwarded to her.
The March Break provided an opportunity for many Adam Scott students to travel. The Rugby Team had a great tour of Scotland, where they posted a 1-1-1 record. One student trip went to France and another trip went to Greece. Also, the Rowing Team went to compete in Tennessee. Adam Scott is always on the move; with our staff and students doing a great job representing our school and our country.
The sun is shining, the days are getting longer and Spring is in the air. With the better weather, numerous activities are in full swing here at Adam Scott: the boys’ rugby teams are practising for their upcoming season, the girls’ rugby team is preparing for OFSAA, the rowing team has begun early morning training, the girls’ lacrosse team is up and running, the Track and Field team has begun outdoor training and the school band continues to play on!
Our school also hosted a successful Fashion Show. The show went for two nights with students modelling fashions from local businesses as well as designs produced in our own Fashion Industry class. The students did a great a job and even put on an afternoon performance for our feeder schools in the area. A thank you to all who participated, particularly Mrs. Tracy Minnema for organizing the show.
I would like to congratulate Jason Straka, who is one of fifteen recipients (across Canada) of the $5000.00 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship for 2005/06. As a Regional Scholarship winner, Jason is also being considered for the National Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award, which will be presented at the National Award Ceremony in Toronto on Earth Day - April 22, 2005. Jason will be presented with his Regional Scholarship at a school ceremony on April 19. We are very proud of Jason.
Lastly, with the good weather, we are starting to see more skateboards at school. Students are reminded that skateboards are not allowed at school for safety reasons and need to be left at home.
A reminder to parents and guardians to check our website www.adamscott.ca to keep up with the multitude of activities and events here at the school. As always, we appreciate your support and input. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Wilf_Gray@kprdsb.ca or at 743-7373 Ext. 143.

Europe 2005!!!
On the March Break, six students from our school took part on a ten day tour of Paris, Nice, Florence and Rome. We were joined by fourteen other students from other schools in our Board, who quickly became close friends of ours. From adjusting to the new 'touchy feely' culture of Europe to struggling with simple communication, we managed to cope and ended up having a blast!
Our first stop was Paris via Amsterdam. After arriving at the airport with intense sleep deprivation (36 hours with no Z's to be exact) we were whisked off to the main sites in Paris: the Eiffel Tower, L'Arc de Triomphe, Le Louvre, and many more. Although our hotel could have easily been mistaken for a hostel, we were still on adrenaline, so it didn't matter in the slightest - after all, we were in Paris!
After two days in fabulous Paris, we hit the train station and travelled to the Mediterranean - Nice! We all agreed that Nice was very nice. It was our first taste of warm European weather and we soaked up as much sun as we could. (ie: not wearing heavy coats, scarves and mittens, like in Paris.) It was a very historical area, including the tomb of Grace Kelly of Monaco.
Another two days passed and after a very long train ride, we were in Florence or 'Firenze' in Italian. There were many exciting things to see there, especially for the art buffs on the trip. There was the famous 'David', the 'Gates to Paradise' and so much more! But the highlight was without a doubt, the market. It was knock off heaven. Fake Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Lacoste and Chanel merchandise was everywhere! Some of us spent a little too much money as we were given exceptional deals by the vendors, but it was a day of non-stop fun!
Our last destination was Rome. Our tour guide, Nino, was our new best friend. He was so painfully funny, yet so knowledgeable. He said to us, with his heavy Italian accent, "When you return to Canada, some will ask if you saw Nino, but most will ask if you saw the Pope...remember, I am the Guide of Kings and the King of Guides!" There were many long lines that we had to wait in to go into St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistene Chapel, (which were well worth the wait) so Nino told us a lot about himself. He took out a picture of his thirteen year old daughter, explaining to us how she idolizes Avril Lavigne, and said, "look what Nino made."
Now, back from Europe, we are all very happy to be home. We will never forget our trip together and we all still stay in touch with our new friends from the other schools. A very special thank you goes out to our chaperones, including M. Fedor from Norwood and especially Mme. Remillard. You made the trip so much fun, while still protecting us from the crazy thieves! So, as they say in Italy, Ciao!

Adam Scott Students are Talented
On April 5th and 6th, 2005, Ms. Tennent’s Grade 10 Drama classes participated in the Kiwanis Festival for Mime, Improvision, Poetry and Storytelling. The students all performed very well. Particular recognition goes to the following first place winners:
Congratulations to all the students involved for their excellent work.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
An enthusiastic group of students along with Ms. Tennent and Ms. Bowser have formed an environmental club, “The Environmental Stewardship Club of Adam Scott”.

Students have planned a week of events for Earth Day with an assembly for the Intermediate classes, a series of environmental announcements and after- school litter pick-ups. The group has approximately 15 members and is growing each week. Plans are already underway to ensure the 2005-06 school year is an active one for the environmental club, whose members have great hopes for raising environmental awareness here at Adam Scott.
GLOBAL YOUTH DAY
On Friday, April 8, a group of students from the Environmental Club and the World Issues class attended the Global Youth Day events at Market Hall. Accompanied by Ms. Tennent and Ms. Bowser, students participated in a day of community-building workshops including ‘theatre for education; ‘volunteering abroad’ and a panel discussion on youth-run businesses with students from other Peterborough area high schools. A highlight of the day was a percussion workshop and an anti-racist hip-hop performance titled, “The Barbershop Show”.
