An Information Newsletter to Parents
October 3, 2003
Judith Hanz, Vice-Principal Catherine Foy, Principal Wilf Gray, Vice-Principal
What a good start to the school year! We have lots of great activities started such as Soccer, Cross Country, Football, Girls' Rugby, Girls' Basketball, Field Hockey, the School Play ("Little Shop of Horrors") and the Terry Fox Run. I really enjoyed meeting everyone at the grade 9 Bar-B-Q. A number of parents jumped in at the last minute to help us and again I'd like to thank those people for their help. Parents do make the difference and I invite you to get involved whenever you can. Our first Parent/Teacher Interview Night is coming up on Wednesday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m. This provides an excellent opportunity to meet your child(ren)'s teachers and be kept informed of their academic success.
We had Crime Stoppers' Constable John McGee come in for an assembly with all our students from Gr. 7 to 10. Crime Stoppers is an excellent community program and our school is proud to be involved with helping students to make good decisions in order to keep our school safe. Crime Stoppers posters will be up in all classrooms. Constable John Stoeckle is our school community officer and he will also be visiting classes as a guest speaker over the school year.
We are working on several ideas to improve communication between home and school. The first is the phone home system where we can phone all parents using an automated phone system with messages for special events such as the Interview Night. You can also have the ASCVI newsletter automatically e-mailed to your e-mail account. See the instructions printed in this newsletter. It is very important to keep the lines of communication open between parents and the school. If you have any suggestions on how we can continue to improve our communication, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Warmest regards,
Catherine
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
The next School Council Meeting will be on October 21, 2003 at 7:00 p.m.
LIST SERVERS
Adam Scott CVI now has three free "email mailing lists" that parents and students may wish to subscribe to. This is due to the generosity of a company called L-Soft that offers this service free to schools. http://netpals.lsoft.com\
In essence, one email sent to the list will go to everyone on the list automatically. Please note that only school administrators can do this. This is known as an "announcement" type of email list.
The first email list called ASCVI-NEWSLETTER-L is for grades 9 to 12, bulletins, current events, the school newsletter and anything else that is of general interest to the school.
The second email list called ASCVIIS-NEWS-L is for the Intermediate grades 7 and 8, bulletins, current events, the school newsletter and anything else that is of general interest to the school.
The third email list is called ASCVI-NEWSEXTR-L is for the entire school to send out announcements about the extracurricular events that are happening at the school (sports schedules, music productions, fund raisers)
Please type the instructions as shown (ie. in Capital letters)
In order to subscribe or unsubscribe to any email list simply send an email to:
LISTSERV@NETPALS.LSOFT.COM
The body of this email must contain the required command. For example to subscribe to the "newsletter" Email List the command would be:
SUBSCRIBE ASCVI-NEWSLETTER-L Firstname Lastname
You should remove any other text from the email.
In order to subscribe to the "Intermediate Newsletter" list:
SUBSCRIBE ASCVIIS-NEWS-L Firstname Lastname
In order to subscribe to the Extracurricular news list:
SUBSCRIBE ASCVI-NEWSEXTR-L Firstname Lastname
To be removed from either list simply replace the word "subscribe" with the
word "SIGNOFF" in the command.
SIGNOFF ASCVI-NEWSLETTER-L
Here is the an example using a sample name:
SUBSCRIBE ASCVI-NEWSLETTER-L John Doe
For security purposes you will receive an email reply asking you to confirm your request.
The Adam Scott Players proudly announce Little Shop of Horrors as this fall's musical production to be presented in the school's auditorium on December 4, 5 & 6th at 7:00 p.m.
The Time: The Early Sixties
The Place: Mushnik's Skid Row Florist Shop
For years, the muscial comedy Little Shop of Horrors made New York audiences scream - with laughter. Thrill to the excitement as Seymour, a down-and-out skid row floral assistant desperately tries to satisfy the voracious craving for human flesh of the unearthly plant which seems to grow before our very eyes, singing and dancing its way into our hearts - literally. Sigh as Seymour longs for a better life and tries to win the love of his bruised and blonde co-worker, Audrey. Woe to Audrey's sadistic boyfriend who becomes quite a tasty meal for the plant, but not its last! The musical is filled with suspense, laughter, chills, music, drama and a 60's girl-group chorus! As one of the longest-running Off Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate and adorable spoof of the 1950's sci-fi movies never fails to entertain. Do plan to join us on any of the three evenings for thrills, chills and laughter!
MUSICAL NOTES
Adam Scott's award winning musical groups are back rehearsing after a well deserved summer break. Stroll by the music room on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and you will hear the sounds of the Concert Band preparing music for the November 1st Commencement ceremonies. On Wednesday and Friday mornings you will hear the awesome sounds of our school's Jazz Band. Tuesdays at lunch hour, the Scott Singers are rehearsing such songs as "Down to the River to Pray" from the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou and "Consider Yourself" from the musical Oliver. All 3 groups will be performing at the Music Department's first evening concert of the year on Wednesday, October 29th at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test
(OSSLT)
On October 22nd and 23rd, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) will be written across the province by all grade 10 students. This test is one of the 32 requirements a student must complete to graduate from secondary school. The Literacy Team at Adam Scott CVI has been planning and preparing your child for success on the test.
The plan at Adam Scott CVI includes:
- two informational assemblies, Oct. 6th and Oct. 21st.
- writing packages in grade 10 classes that simulate the questions on the test
- reading packages in grade 10 classes that simulate the questions on the test
- lunch hour remediation on Oct. 14th for students who are concerned about their success on the test
- a reading and writing tips information hand-out that is included in the school newsletter (for Gr. 10 students only)
- information about the literacy test that is posted on the school website
It is very important that all grade 10 students are present on both days of the test because it is not possible to make up the missed part of the test. Students who miss a day are automatically unsuccessful on the test and they will need to re-write it next October. Students must also be on time for the test because they will not be able to receive extra time if they are late.
If you wish more information on the OSSLT, there will be an informational assembly on October 8th at 6:30 p.m. in the Adam Scott auditorium prior to Parents' Night which begins at 7:00 p.m.

TERRY FOX RUN
![]()
With the approval of our School Board, all of the high schools in KPRDSB participate in the High School Terry Fox Run, an event that raises funds for innovative cancer research. This event provides the students with a valuable opportunity to be part of a community focused event, and a chance to have a lot of fun with all of the students in the county. Students are not required to 'run', but will walk around the track at the Oval about 10 times before returning to the school. We encourage all of our students to participate, but those who choose not to are expected to be in the school working on the activities provided for that afternoon.
Date of this year's run: Friday, October 17th
Location: Nichol's Oval
Time: 12:30 - 1:00 - supervised walk as a group to Nichol's Oval
1:00 - 2:00 - walk around the Oval as a group
2:15 - 3:00 - supervised walk back to Adam Scott (students are expected to stay with the group)

No place for marijuana in schools
Dr. Avis E. Glaze
Director of Education
We are delighted to welcome our students back to school and to seize the opportunities that a new school year brings. We thank all parents for entrusting us with the responsibility of assisting them in the education of their children. We will continue to provide the best possible programs and school environments for our students.
This is a privilege for all of us in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.
Many parents and community members have asked us how the federal government's decision to decriminalize the possession of marijuana will affect our schools. We thought that it would be a good idea to inform all members of our community of our stance on this issue.
This is our position: the possession of marijuana on school property will not be tolerated. It will continue to be prohibited at school, on school buses and on school trips - just as alcohol, tobacco products and other drugs are prohibited. The possession of such substances is not appropriate in the school setting.
Students found in possession of marijuana will be suspended, as they would be for possession of other inappropriate substances such as alcohol. Any marijuana found on students will be confiscated and destroyed.
We invited police representatives from across the region to meet with us over the summer to ensure that we had a common understanding of where the school system stands on the issue. We also discussed how we could proceed should any situation arise in which a student possesses marijuana.
All parties agreed that schools will continue to notify the police if anyone is found in possession of marijuana. While the police will not lay possession charges, they have indicated that they will make a report and maintain the information on file.
We assure our community that we will continue to do everything we can to safeguard the students under our care. We will maintain our high expectations and standards for appropriate student behaviour. There will continue to be consequences for any actions that detract from students' ability to learn and grow in a secure, supportive and healthy environment.
It is a good educational strategy, on any issue that involves behaviour, to focus on prevention. Instilling self discipline is an important goal. We want our students to choose to do the right thing, even when they are not being watched or supervised.
We consider it our responsibility to support parents in providing the knowledge, life skills and ethical compass necessary for students' future well-being, and for the success of society as a whole.
Over the coming year, our schools will be embarking on a systematic approach to character education, one which builds upon the efforts already in place. Our goal will be to instill the universal values and character attributes which we all desire in our future citizens.
You may remember that our community members found common ground on the attributes which they would like us to foster in our students. They identified these attributes in a series of forums last spring. We will continue to work with staff, students, parents, school councils and our community partners to implement the character education program, and to evaluate its success. Throughout the coming months, we will continue to keep all of our partners informed of our progress in this vital initiative.
We hasten to say that character education is first and foremost the responsibility of parents and guardians. Schools will play an important and supportive role. With this renewal of our efforts, we are reaffirming our commitment to the roots of public education, namely academic achievement, character education and citizenship development.
Our students deserve no less.
