Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. has a focus on student achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines. This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a climate which is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The staff and students at this school continue to amaze me. This school is filled with student activity from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Band practice, both secondary and intermediate, is up and running as well as a variety of sports and clubs. Our Student Council has held their first dance (Pirates of the Caribbean) and is presently selling student cards ($7.00). Our Yearbook class is selling yearbook/photo packages and the majority of our students are gearing up for the Terry Fox Run on Thursday, October 12th.

In terms of academics, I am pleased to see the successful start up of several new courses. Mr. Wright and Mr. Bemrose have set up a new student leadership course (PLF 4C1) that is based on skill development through Outdoor Education. This class has just completed a 4 day trip to Algonquin Park through the rain and sunshine. Many of the students in this course will be using this experience as a component for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The overwhelming response last year to our grade 10 guitar course (100 students) has led to the creation of a grade 11 course this year. Several students from the course will perform at Commencement.

The Adam Scott stock car built in our Automotive/Race Car program was successfully driven by our auto teacher, Mr. Flindall to several 2nd place finishes during the summer. Watch for this car at the High School Fair at the Evinrude Centre on Tuesday, November 7th.

New staff to the school include Mr. Ted LaCarte (Physics), Ms. Nathalie Fournier (French Immersion/Science) and Mr. Michael Colling (Mathematics). Returning to the school are Mrs. Kim McBride (Phys. Ed./Math), Mrs. Cheryl Murray (Family Studies/Math) and Ms. Lynda Hodgins (LLS). These teachers have quickly become an integral part of the staff.

Parent/Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, October 18th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Please continue to communicate with teachers on an ongoing basis if your son/daughter is struggling. Attendance information can be obtained from Ms. Gemmiti at Ext. 160.

The students in the Locally Developed program are not required to write the EQAO test.

TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY

The goal (across Canada) is to have grade 9 students attend a place of employment with an adult on Wednesday, November 1st. This is a great opportunity for students to experience a regular work day and to see first hand the expectations/rewards of employment. Our goal at Adam Scott is to find placements through parents/relatives/friends for all of our grade 9 students for that day. More information will follow.

ROTARIANS ASSIST ADAM SCOTT STUDENTS IN THE INTERVIEW ROOM!

Mock interviews are an integral component of the pre-employment training that Adam Scott Co-op students must complete before beginning their work placements. Each student must participate in a mock interview with someone from the professional or business community, at their respective places of business.

On Tuesday, September 12th, twenty-six Rotarians met individually with our students to help them practice their interview skills, and to offer advice on how to prepare and perform in their Co-op placement interviews.

Special thanks go to Peterborough Rotarian Rick Storey and Kawartha Rotarian David Martin, who both assisted greatly in the promotion of this program within their membership. Specific thanks go to Rotarians Bob Angione (Coyle Corrugated), Gary Ainsworth (lawyer), Bob Bedford (Primerica Financial), Jon Bryan (Mexicali Rosa’s), Ken Clare (Brown Business Equipment), Willard Chapman, Clarence Collison (Alison Realty GMAC), Paul Darby (PRHC), Lloyd Graham, William Hampton (lawyer), Paul Hartung (Trent Valley Literacy), Norm Kastner (CIBC), Doug Lockington (Play It Again Sports), Inspector Ray Vandervelde (Peterborough-Lakefield Police), David Martin (Canada Broker Link), Joe McCulloch (Vincent Press), Susan Sharpe (Brant Office), Amy Simpson (MicroAge Computers), Lorraine Skipwith (Peterborough County-City Health Unit), Morgan Smith (Sign-A-Rama), Wayne Smith (Comstock Funeral Home), Alex Soubliere (Friendly Fires), Rick Storey (Bill Storey Pontiac Buick), Wendy Swain (Holiday Inn), and Steven Vass.
