PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Like all staff and students, I looked forward to the first day of school. On that day, you get to reacquaint yourself with the teaching staff and the students that make this place a great place to be and experience the many routines which begin again.
One of these routines is the start up of the many extra-curricular programs which continue to happen at this school. Band, sports teams, yoga, Students’ Activity Council, GWME’s, and auditions/practices for this year’s musical production, “Crazy For You”are in full swing. These activities increase school spirit and provide a wide variety of benefits to both staff and students.
I made a point of going to the first senior football practice on the first day of school to see a team on our new playing field. The field has matured over the summer to form a thick bed of grass and it was very satisfying to see a team play on it. I am hopeful that, with some careful scheduling and with the use of the new irrigation and drainage system, the field will be one of the best in the city. I believe that the inconvenience of playing/practices on other fields last year was worth it. Over the next two weeks, a fence will be put up to completely enclose the field so that it can be shut down (for preservation) during certain times of the year.
Our EQAO Mathematics results show that we are doing well in the academic programs at our school. Our result of an 84% pass rate in our grade 9 test is exceptional and exceeds the provincial average by 13%.
New teachers to our school include Mr. Kevin Robinson (English/History), Ms. Ingrid Morgan (English) and Ms. Julie Paige (LLS). Returning from a leave is Mrs. Tracy Minnema. I am also pleased to welcome Mrs. Annie Johnston as our vice-principal in charge of the Intermediate section of the school.
At our recent Professional Development Day (Oct. 5), we ran an in-school session on “The Use of Computer Technology to Enhance Instruction.” “Hands-on” workshops involved instruction on the design of Podcasts, Wikiis and Powerpoint. Other topics included digital photography and photo sorting/retrieval, the use of SMART BOARDs and the sorting of data using charts and mneumonics.
Parent/Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, October 17th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Please continue to communicate with teachers on an ongoing basis especially if your son/daughter is struggling. Attendance information can be obtained from Ms. Gemmiti at Ext. 160.

TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY
The goal (across Canada) is to have grade 9 students attend a place of employment with an adult on Wednesday, November 7th. This is a great opportunity for students to experience a regular work day and to see first hand the expectations/rewards of employment. Our goal at Adam Scott is to find placements through parents/relatives/friends for all of our grade 9 students for that day. More information will follow.
