MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION
What a good start to the school year. We have lots of great activities started such as Soccer, Cross Country, Terry Fox Walk and Student Council. Our first Adam Scott Parent Council meeting is September 20th, 2004 at 6:45 p.m. in the library and everyone is invited. Parents do make the difference and I invite you to get involved whenever you can.
Mark the night of Thursday, September 23rd on your calender, that will be our first Open House of the school year. This night is designed for parents to meet the teachers and ask questions about the curriculum.
The Internet Club is made up of students from every class who will help in getting the homework posted on the school website each day. The school website will have all our events posted including presentations from assemblies, newsletters and other current events. You can have the Intermediate Newsletter automatically e-mailed to your e-mail account. See the instructions printed in this newsletter.
WELCOME
Welcome Mrs. Jennifer Knox to our Intermediate School. Mrs. Knox has been at Adam Scott before and will be looking after our Phys. Ed. programme. She has already started our intramurals.
TERRY FOX RUN
Again this year, we will be participating in the Terry Fox Run. Students will be given pledge sheets to collect pledges which may be used toward tax deductions. With a $2 pledge, students can take part in the walk at our football field. The goal for our Intermediate school will be to raise $500 for the Cancer Foundation. Wednesday, October 6th is the date for the school run and the Intermediates will be on the track at A.S.C.V.I.
ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION LITERACY PACKAGE
The grade10 Literacy testing may seem like a long way away but, it is surprising how soon it is before students are writing it. As a staff, we will be exploring literacy assessment packages at both grade 7 and 8 levels. This helps students determine their strengths and weaknesses in both reading and writing. This information will help us to tailor the program to meet student needs for success in their future.
STUDENT HANDBOOKS
Student handbooks will be provided to Intermediate students free of charge sometime this week. Please review with your student the information at the beginning of the booklet. This section provides useful information regarding various topics pertaining to our school environment.
HEPATITIS B VACCINATIONS
The Public Health Department has confirmed our dates for the Hep B vaccinations for our grade 7 students this year. Our first vaccination date will be in October. If you have any questions about the Hep B vaccinations please call the Public Health Unit at 743-1000.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is necessary to make good progress at school. If you find it necessary to be absent, the following will be followed:
Students will NOT be excused from school without parental consent.
1) If a student is to be excused during the school day, (dentist, doctor, etc.), the parent or guardian must send a note to school with the student explaining the circumstance, or the parent may telephone the school. The student will receive an excuse slip from the office.
2) If a student is absent from school the whole day or part of a day, the parent will telephone the school or the SAMS (Safe Arrival Management System) - 743-8012 prior to the student=s absence and the student shall return with a note signed by the parent or guardian. This note is to be presented to the office upon the student=s return the next morning, or to the office if the student arrives later in the day. The child will receive an admit slip.
Notes need to include date(s) of absence, reason for absence, and parent=s or guardian=s signature.
3) Children are expected to attend school for program instruction even when few children are present in the class. This is a valuable time for extra help.
! Students are expected to remain on school property all day. Should a child wish to leave school at lunch, the following must be abided by:
(i) Student must present a note from a parent/guardian giving permission.
(ii) The note must be submitted to the office.
(iii) Students cannot be tardy for afternoon classes.
(iv) One note giving permission for the entire school year may be sent in and kept on file.
Parents who permit their children to leave school property accept full responsibility for their actions as they are NOT under school supervision.
LATES:
Punctuality is essential at all times. Students who are late disrupt classes and waste the time of other students and the teacher. When a student is late for school he/she is expected to report to his/her teacher. The teacher will keep records of the number of times a student is late. At 6 lates students will be referred to the office. Continued late arrival without parental explanation will have further consequences.

AAACS for ASIS
As one of our School Improvement Initiatives this year we have developed a positive plan for students to get involved in co-curricular activities. This plan is called AAACS for ASIS which stands for: Academics, Athletics, Arts and Community Service for Adam Scott Intermediate School. In this program students are rewarded for being involved in a variety of activities at the school or in their community. The insert included in this newsletter outlines the many activities that will be offered by staff at our school. Please make certain you remove this sheet and put it on the fridge for your child to easily access throughout the year.
This program awards points for involvement in a number of activities. At the end of the year these points are totaled and students who have above a certain score are recognized with a reward that speaks to their involvement. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of students in each grade receive a prize or medal of some kind. These presentations are made at the end of the year to each grade in an award ceremony to which parents are invited.
Please encourage your child to review the activities offered and listen for announcements that will indicate when each activity is to start. Active involvement in positive activities around the school will undoubtedly lead to a decrease in negative behaviors and make Adam Scott an even safer and more positive place to come and get involved.
