VICE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

- MS. RUSSELL

The last several weeks at Adam Scott Intermediate School have been very exciting and fulfilling. I have met many wonderful students, teachers, and parents. In my short time here, I have witnessed many wonderful and challenging academic programs for students as well as a myriad of co-curricular activities that students may choose to participate in. It is my belief that education is a very dynamic process that changes and improves on a daily basis. It is my hope that all community members can work together to continue to develop and improve education and involve students in innovative and challenging programs.

Up and Coming..

1.           LATE CLUB: Beginning next week, students who are habitually late can expect to attend detention class with Ms. Russell on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 until 3:45. Ms. Russell will be spending extra time with students and enriching their academic experiences with challenging after school homework.

2.         Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming Character Education and Anti-Bullying Programs.

3.         Please encourage your kids to complete homework, read books and to challenge themselves.

Snow Days: All students who walk to school are expected to attend school even when busses are cancelled.

Parents: Please continue to talk to your kids about bullying and harassment. If there are issues that you become aware of, please call Ms. Russell at 743-7373. We do not accept or put up with students attempting to rob others of a safe learning environment.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

If you are interested in participating in our school day, please contact Ms. Russell.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

On February 11th, Madeleine Brown, Katelyn Franko, and Harrison Perkins gave their speeches at the Lion’s Club Speak-Off. Their enthusiasm and persistence is to be commended. Madeleine Brown will be attending the next level of the public speaking contest, held in Bowmanville, on March 4th, and all three of our students will be speaking at the Peterborough Legion during the afternoon of March 5th. Good luck to you!

WINTER ACTIVITY DAY: DEVIL’S ELBOW

Students had an excellent time on Adam Scott Intermediate’s Winter Activity Day, Friday, February 24th. We had great winter weather at Devil’s Elbow, and our students did our school proud. Teachers were impressed by the level of respect and cooperation shown.

Some typical comments on the day: “My best ski day ever!”, “I had so much fun - I’ve never skiied before, and I learned so much!”, “Can we do this again next week?” Students skiied or snowboarded on a variety of hills, and the lift wait time was minimal - everyone was able to make as many runs as they wanted, and come in to get warmed up between outings.

Thanks to our parents who came out to Devil’s Elbow - there were quite a few! It is so helpful to have extra eyes and ears, and skilled participants. The new requirement of a current police check (which can take up to 14 working days to obtain) to participate in any school activity can present a challenge; we will have to bear this in mind when planning any school trips. We suggest that parents who are interested in volunteering for trips this spring make a request now for the school form which will reduce the cost of the check, and put in their application to the police department now.

We are particularly appreciative of Mr. Monte Smith, for his work in booking Devil’s Elbow, producing forms, collating information, and driving ahead to get our tickets. Thank you!

Thanks also to the teachers and teacher candidates, both at school and at Devil’s Elbow, whose support made the trip possible. It was a great day!

School-based events were well received - in the morning, students participated in the Science Olympic challenge of tower building and played basketball in the gym; in the afternoon they went skating at Northcrest Arena or prepared a meal for Cameron House.SKATING AT NORTHCREST

It was a nice cold walk to Northcrest Arena for 22 of our Intermediate students on Friday, February 24th. But, it was worth it to have the whole rink to ourselves. There were a few beginners in the group. They did a good job of going around and they had lots of help doing it. All in all, a good day for all involved.

COOKING WITH MS LOCKLIN

Students not participating in sporting events on February 24th were busy cooking and baking for the residents of Cameron House. Many thanks to Mr. Wade and his teaching staff for their offer to share their kitchen facilities and their culinary expertise. Groups of students worked well together to make a tasty meal including chili, mandarin salad, baked “cloud” biscuits and fruit crisp.

SCIENCE WITH MR. WALKER

The science activity that was held during the Winter Activity Day involved the building of a tower using a single sheet of paper.

INTRAMURALS

Basketball Intramurals are underway. Basketball Golf, 2 on 2 and 5 on 5 games are very popular. Join in the fun! Your Athletic Council is brainstorming other fun Intramural ideas – see them if you have any suggestions!!

ASIS VOLLEYBALL TEAMS

The boys and girls competitive and recreational volleyball teams played very well in their respective tournaments last month. Way to go teams!

The Mixed Volleyball tournament is re-scheduled due to weather for Feb. 24th.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Mrs. Knox is taking a group of cross country skiers to the Intermediate Provincial Championships in Hardwood Hills in early March. The girls have done extremely well in other competitions this winter, competing against older students.

BASKETBALL TRY-OUTS

Basketball try-outs will begin in March – listen to the announcements for try out dates! Mr. Scholey and Mr. Whitney (high school teachers and coaches) will coach the boys team, and Mrs. Knox will coach the girls team.
