Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. has a focus on student achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines. This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a climate which is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.
MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION
We have had a lot of exciting activities going on at Adam Scott over the past month. Our Open House and first ever Historica Fair was a great success!
Our thirteen judges had a very difficult time choosing top projects because of the effort and enthusiasm all our students put into their projects. Our students represented us very well at the opening of the Canoe Museum. Local MP Peter Adams and MPP Jeff Leal were very impressed with the projects and the depth of knowledge the students demonstrated.

The Intermediate Band did a wonderful performance at Canada’s Wonderland recently. Jamie Desjardins, a grade 11 student, and Mr. Simmons have been working hard to help keep the band up to performing quality while Mrs. Locklin has been ill. As many of us heard during the Open House, they have done a good job and the students hard work really showed.
An exciting basketball season is winding down. Both girls’ and boys’ teams played with enthusiasm and developed their skills considerably. Thanks to Mr. Jeff Pascoe for his dedication to both teams. Thanks also to Ms. Scott and Ms. Irvine for their encouragement.
Students from the Peer Reading Programme were honoured this month with a visit from MP Peter Adams. An informal chat allowed for open dialogue about Adam Scott’s newest programme, designed by Don Jones. The program integrates trained reading tutors from the secondary panel with elementary students. Mr. Adams was very impressed with the efforts of Adam Scott students and staff, but most enjoyed his in-class observation of the programme in action. He has promised to promote programmes such as this at the provincial level. Way to go Adam Scott!
The end of the year is fast approaching and with the end of the year comes thoughts of graduation, summer holidays and school trips. Thank you to all members of our school community for their support with our fund-raisers this year. The donut sales were very successful and we have also received a large number of orders for our plant sale. Thank you to all our volunteers for all of their hard work on this fund raising-campaign and Sharron Hatton and John Britton for organizing these events.
Graduation will be occurring next month and already the students are discussing what they are going to wear for their graduation ceremony and dance. The enthusiasm for the elementary leaving ceremony is understandable but, some students are concerned about the quality of their attire and whether or not they will "fit in" with the social expectations for the evening. Please take some time to talk to your child(ren) about the realities of dressing appropriately for a school event and the judicious spending of money on outfits. Reviewing with all students that people come from a variety of different social situations and should not be judged on their physical appearance or attire may help to encourage inclusion and group support for each and every person who will take pride in graduating from the elementary panel. This is a special day for all our children.
CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR NEXT YEAR
Academic balance within each class is of primary importance when making up the class lists; individual student needs and abilities are taken into account for all students. Although we recognize the importance of social relationships for this age group, we do not place students in classes based on their friendships with other students.
Staff assignments are subject to change every year. Assignments and staffing units are not determined until mid-June and there is always the possibility that the teacher you have requested for your child will not be teaching at this school in September. Your understanding in this area is greatly appreciated.
WELCOMING BARBECUE
Each Spring we hold a barbecue to welcome the new Grade 7 students (fall 2004) into our School Community. Information sessions about the Grade 6 to Grade 7 transition are going to be held at this year’s Welcoming Open House and Barbecue here, at Adam Scott. Grade 6 students attending our feeder schools along with our current grade 7 students will be invited to this event. This B.B.Q. will allow the new students and their families to meet and greet the our grade 7 students in a relaxed atmosphere. A tour of the school’s facilities will take place after the B.B.Q.
This year the Barbecue will take place on Thursday, June 3rd between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. A form will be attached to this Newsletter asking you how many people will be attending. The cost will be set at $5.00 per family. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Tim Bits and Milk will be available. Please fill out the form and return it by Tuesday, May 25th .
GRADE 8 GRADUATION
This year’s Grade 8 Graduation will be held on June 21st. Traditionally the Grade 7 parents help with the graduation by providing food and drinks for the parents and grads after the event. We need all Grade 7 parents to step forth and provide what is needed. Grade 7 teachers, Mrs. Harding, Ms. Scott, Ms. Irvine, and Mr. Simmons are organizing this important event and can be reached at: 743-7373.
