Adam Scott Intermediate

September 16, 2005

Principal - Craig Allan Vice Principal - Bob Fenton Vice Principal - Karl Wunderlich

Superintendent of Student Achievement - W.R. Hick

Trustees: Rose Kitney, Diane Lloyd, Roy Wilfong

Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. has a focus on student achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines. This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a climate which is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!

We are pleased to report that we had a very smooth and successful school opening. Students returned to school smiling and eager to get started. Clubs and sports activities are organized and operating and soon the summer will be a distant memory replaced by exciting school programmes. Thanks to teachers who were in during the month of August to ensure we could open so efficiently; there’s no such thing as a slow day at Adam Scott!

We will be having our first Open House on the 27th of September starting at 6:30 p.m. This will be your opportunity to meet our new staff and say hello to old friends. Curriculum has certainly changed a great deal since we were all in school and so you may find this very interesting. Come with your questions and be prepared to follow your student’s timetable.

NEW TEACHING STAFF

We are pleased to welcome several new staff to Adam Scott Intermediate who all come highly recommended.

Sue Elworthy will assist with resource work and the L.L.S. class. She also will be our Science Consultant; this is probably a good choice as she once worked for NASA!

Colleen Segriff will be our Resource Teacher and is a new hire to the Board. She has a positive approach with students and is very good at supporting them.

Mike Melchionna moved from Toronto to Peterborough to work first at James Strath P.S. and then at The Pines Intermediate School. He is our L.L.S. teacher. Mr. Melchionna is very student centered.

STUDENT HANDBOOKS

All of our students have received free Student Handbooks because we believe organized students are achieving students. Please look at them and discuss with your student the school policies listed therein. The bright green cover is easy to spot and we encourage the students to write homework expectations down and to record test dates. Checking the handbook would be an excellent way for parents to get involved in student success.

ANAPHYLACTIC STUDENTS

As part of our student safety program, we reviewed our Anaphylactic procedures at the staff meeting of September 12th. If your student has such issues and has not been contacted by Mr. Fenton by September 23rd, please call the school. All staff are aware of which pupils are subject to reactions and have received training on the use of epi-pens. Dr. Don Curtis, a long time friend of Adam Scott, provided in-service training to staff and led a discussion on anaphylactic issues. Please note the “Peanut Free Snack Food List” insert page.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

Our first meeting is 6:45 p.m. Monday, September 19th in the library. All parents are invited to attend.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance is necessary to make good progress at school. If you find it necessary to be absent, the following will be followed:

Students will NOT be excused from school without parental consent.

a)    If a student is to be excused during the school day, (dentist, doctor, etc.), the parent or guardian must send a note to school with the student explaining the circumstance, or the parent may telephone the school. The student will receive an excuse slip from the office.

b)    If a student is absent from school the whole day or part of a day, the parent will telephone the school or the SAMS (Safe Arrival Management System) - 743-7373 ext. 155, prior to the student’s absence and the student shall return with a note signed by the parent or guardian. This note is to be presented to the office upon the student’s return the next morning, or to the office if the student arrives later in the day. The child will receive an admit slip.

Notes need to include date(s) of absence, reason for absence, and parent’s or guardian’s signature.

c)   Children are expected to attend school for program instruction even when few children are present in the class. This is a valuable time for extra help.

Students are expected to remain on school property all day. Should a child wish to leave school at lunch, the following must be abided by:

             (i)   Student must present a note from a parent/guardian giving permission.

(ii)   The note must be submitted to the office.

(iii)   Students cannot be tardy for afternoon classes.

(iv)   One note giving permission for the entire school year may be sent in and kept on file.

            (v)   If a student has been provided with a parental note excusing them for the lunch period during the year, the student will notify the home room teacher if they choose to remain in school on a particular day.

Parents who permit their children to leave school property accept full responsibility for their actions as they are NOT under school supervision.

LATES:

Punctuality is essential at all times. Students who are late disrupt classes and waste the time of other students and the teacher. When a student is late for school he/she is expected to report to his/her teacher. The teacher will keep records of the number of times a student is late. At 6 lates students will be referred to the office. Continued late arrival without parental explanation will have further consequences.

ASSESSMENT - EVALUATION - LITERACY

As of this writing, we have been back at school for nine full days. The staff are already working hard to improve reading levels. We have just completed testing all the grade sevens and are beginning to formally evaluate grade eight reading levels. The information gleaned from this will be the basis of remediation and enrichment programs. Student success is our goal and we will endeavour to prepare pupils for the rigors of our program as well as standardized testing. The reading test results are certainly available to parents. Contact your student’s teacher.

PEER MEDIATION

As you know, from time to time disputes arise among pre-teens and teenagers. We are training a group of intermediate and high school students to become peer mediators. The training is conducted in a full day session by K.P.R. resource staff.

Students follow a procedure with disputants who may ask for help or who are referred by staff or parents. The point of it is to get a satisfactory resolution to a problem through negotiation. A written agreement is produced which is monitored as time goes on. The process is always voluntary and confidential. In the past, the program has been highly successful in dealing with many issues including bullying and harassment.

Peer mediators find the skills they develop and the experience as a whole very useful in their own lives.

SCHOOL GOALS

The goals of the Intermediate School for this year are still being developed. However, they do include:

a)  Improvement in EQAO Literacy and Math results

b)  Effective Communication

c)  Character Education implementation

d)  I.E.P. development.

Research tells us that effective organizations have clearly stated goals and a realistic plan to achieve them.

STUDENT COUNCIL

We will call for elections soon to establish a Student Council at the Intermediate School This will be an important part of our leadership development program. Students will have the opportunity to plan school life from dances to community work. They will have the chance to attend system level leadership development events. It is never too early to develop leadership skills which will be valuable in later life. Please encourage your son or daughter to stand for election.

STUDENT SAFETY IS JOB 1!

At our first staff meeting, we reviewed all our emergency procedures concerning fire and intruders to the school. Our police liaison, P.C. Mark Habgood, led a question and answer session on student personal security and related issues. Although we need to be prepared for all situations, I need to tell you that such problems are rare at this school.

MUSIC PROGRAMS

Concert Band for grade 7 and 8 students will begin in January due to Mrs. Locklin’s commitment to the musical “Annie” this fall.

Grade 8 musicians are invited to come out for Jazz Band Try Outs on Thursday, September 29th at noon in the Music Room. (Bring your lunch) Guitar players are asked to bring their own equipment please.

Thanks to all our Intermediate students for their auditions and interest in our School Musical. Show dates are December 7th (matinee), December 8th, 9th, and 10th. Be sure to put us on your calendar for the Christmas Season - it’s sure to bring you cheer!

Bouquets of flowers were given to Mrs. Kathy Wollny for her continued support of the Intermediate Concert Band. Mrs. Wollny organizes morning snacks from Tim Horton’s for band members. Our sincere thanks go to Sandy from the Water St. Tim Horton’s for her gracious support.

Soccer is the first Intramural sport this fall. Over 80 students are participating at lunch - everyone is welcome. Watch the bulletin board for the upcoming sign up for Flag Football and Stones. Grab your friends and sign up for lunch time fun!
