This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a climate which is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.

MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

Welcome back everyone. We hope that you had a wonderful break over the winter holidays and managed to find time to spend with family and loved ones.

It has been a very busy month and we have many activities going on. Mrs. Locklin has both girls and boys entered in a volleyball tournament on January 29th with many Intermediate schools coming to A.S.C,V.I.

Mme. Girard and Mrs. McCord have started our students on their Science Fair Projects and Mme. Harding will be working on getting a History Fair going after the March Break.

Mrs. Scott has been working with the Theatre Sports Club and with our parent volunteers to get the Ski Trip ready for February 4th.

Commencing this February, we will have a new Peer Tutor Reading Programme starting up. We have been doing Literacy Assessments with all our students this week to help us to prepare students and plan for next year. During this process, we will be selecting grade 7 and 8 students to be matched one-on-one with a trained high school tutor. Mrs. Delorme, one of our high school English Teachers, will be working with the tutors and Ms. Book will help to co-ordinate the Intermediate students.

Mr. Glynn is continuing with our Anti-Bullying Campaign with new presentations beginning in February. The YMCA Healthy Living presentations that took place in December will have follow-up workshops in February as well.

We have Student Teachers and Student Educational Assistants working with us in a variety of classes. They are Jeff Pascoe and Mallory Kent (Student Teachers), and Sally Salloway and Suzanne Lavoignon (E.A.'s). Ms. Irvine and Mr. Jeff Pascoe will be starting a lunch-time Intramural Basketball programme in February.

This will be the last month that our Vice-Principal, Judith Hanz, will be at Adam Scott and we wish her all the best with her retirement.

Due to Ms. Hanz's retirement, the Vice-Principal position will be filled by Mr. Karl Wunderlich. Mr. Wunderlich has experience as a Vice-Principal in our system and we look forward to his arrival. He is very excited to be here at Adam Scott and will attend the next School Council meeting in order to introduce himself to the parent community. This meeting will occur on February 17th from 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. in the school library. Please attend and welcome Mr. Wunderlich. We are thrilled that he will be joining the Adam Scott team.

We now have a team for the boys' tournament on January 28th at James Strath P.S., and a team for the girls' tournament here at Adam Scott on January 29th. Over the last few weeks, students have worked to develop their playing skills under the able coaching of our multi-talented Mrs. Locklin (thanks for the demonstrations!), while Mme. PUBLIC SPEAKING

A great group of grade 7 and 8 students have been meeting weekly with Mme. Harding to brainstorm ideas and get feedback on their speech writing. As we approach mid-February, the meetings' emphasis will turn to memorization and presentation techniques. Members will present their speeches at the Intermediate Public Speaking Assembly, to be held Tuesday, February 24th from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Ms. Laura Doucette, Literacy Consultant for our school board, will be among our judges that morning. We welcome parents and family to this event.

ADAM SCOTT INTERMEDIATE CONCERT BAND

Mrs. Locklin has been rehearsing with Adam Scott Intermediate Concert Band members as of the first week of January on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 to 8:30 am. An overwhelming number of students have made a commitment to the band this year ... see the list below. We have made excellent progress so far with repertoire such as; Mission Impossible, Charterpoint, Louie, Louie, Ancient Moon, and Royal March. The sound in the music room is amazing, and although seating is an issue, Mrs. Foy has agreed to order some more chairs for the music room. Thank you for your commitment to the Band; especially to parents for the early morning transportation and car pooling. ... we usually have a good time, once everyone is awake!

PLANS

Returning Concert Band members (Grade 8 students) had a very successful year last year and we are looking for an active performing year this Jan-May also. As this requires practice and dedication, if students are unable to make progress with the music by performance time they will not be asked to perform until they are prepared. Grade 7 students seem to improve very quickly rehearsing with the band, and Grade 8 students need to take a leadership role and assist students in their section.

This year we hope to be prepared to perform for the following:

1. Portage Place Mall (March - April)

2. Kiwanis Music Festival (March -April)

3. Feeder School Concerts (May)

4. Wonderland Music Festival (May - 1st wk)

This is fairly demanding considering we will have only 32 rehearsals! Performances depend on the readiness of the ensemble to perform the repertoire. Home practice is essential to our success!

Parents will be needed to assist with more vest construction and as volunteers on our "road trips". Our upcoming social event is the Band "Rock & Bowl" night on Friday, February 6. Students are responsible for their own costs and transportation. When we work so hard in the morning, it's good to

have an occasion to have some fun and for students to get to know one another.
