MISSION STATEMENT

There will be at Adam Scott C.V.I./I.S. an emphasis on student achievement with clearly stated expectations and equitable assessment guidelines. This mandate will be met within a purposeful learning atmosphere that is free from the threat of physical or emotional harm, delivered within a climate that is supportive of curriculum and instruction, and that addresses the learning needs of both staff and students.

MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

It is hard to believe that the end of another school year is upon us so quickly. As the year winds down we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff, students and parents of the Intermediate division for their hard work this year. Thanks to the efforts of all the members of our school community, this year was a very successful and positive experience for all of us. A special thank you goes out to Randy Romano and Monty Smith, our school council chairs, for all of their efforts to amalgamate our two school councils into one effective and collegial group of dedicated parent volunteers who work diligently on behalf of all of our students.

This year we are going to be saying goodbye and good luck to two of our staff. Mrs. Cogley will be retiring this year and moving on to different activities in September. We are all saddened to see her leave, but wish her all the best for the future. Mrs. Cogley has taught at Adam Scott for many years and has been an integral part of the Intermediate staff. She has worked with compassion and understanding to support the needs of our identified students, and has championed the cause of the need for increased resources for staff through her involvement as the teacher representative on school council. From all of the staff, students, and parents whose lives you have touched we thank you for your dedication to the teaching profession and the vast amount of knowledge and experience you have brought to our staff.

Ms. Hope will also be moving on to be the Vice Principal at Kenner Collegiate and Vocational Institute. After two years as an administrator at Adam Scott she has been selected to assist in the transition of Grade 7 and 8 students from the south end elementary schools to Kenner. Given the experience she has gathered through working at Adam Scott we are certain that she will have successful transition to the new school. On behalf of all of the staff, students, and parents in the Adam Scott community we wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors. We will miss you!

This month, our Grade 7 and 8 French Immersion students will have the opportunity to go to Quebec City for their end of the year trip. This educational experience is offered every two years so that each of our French Immersion students can enjoy the Quebec culture and apply the language skills that they have been acquiring through the years. We are very pleased that this trip is going forward and offer a special thanks to the French Immersion teachers (Mme. Girard and Mme. Dalton) for all of the efforts to make this trip a successful one. Another thank you is extended to all of the Intermediate staff and parent community for their untiring support of this trip. Without everyone's dedication and co-operation this trip would not have been able to occur. To the students who are going on the trip we wish you all the best and hope that you have a wonderful time. As ambassadors of Adam Scott we are certain that every student will conduct themselves with maturity and show all people with whom they come in contact what a wonderful group of students they are.

Mrs. Locklin would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who were involved in the fund-raisers that were held throughout the year to raise money for the Instrumental Music program. Mrs. Locklin's dedication to this program has resulted in all of our Intermediate students developing an appreciation of various instruments as well as acquiring musical skills. A number of students were able to write and perform their own compositions this year that spoke volumes about the success of this specialized program.

Please check the important dates section in this newsletter so you are aware of the dates and times for our AAACS awards assembly, as well as the planned activities throughout the month of June. Mark your calendars as we hope to see you at our June barbeque, as well as our Grade 8 graduation ceremony. Special thanks go out to all the parents who have volunteered to help make this graduation a memorable one.

MESSAGE FROM MS. HOPE

The students, parents and staff at Adam Scott are undoubtedly some of the most positive and dedicated members of any school community. The commitment of each individual to work to the best of their ability and assist in school based events whenever possible has been wonderful to see and I am thrilled to be able to leave Adam Scott with nothing but positive, enriching memories. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every staff member, student, and parent with whom I have come in contact for their unflinching support and assistance throughout my two years at Adam Scott. I was warmly welcomed when I arrived at this school and have benefitted from the many different experiences that I have had. I have learned so much here that I am certain my experiences at Kenner next year will be equally as satisfying. Thank you very much for allowing me to be a part of the Adam Scott community. I shall never forget the laughter, the people I have met, or any of my time here.

Academic balance within each class is of primary importance when making up the class lists; individual student needs and abilities are taken into account for all students. Although we recognize the importance of social relationships for this age group, we do not place students in classes based on their friendships with other students.

Staff assignments are subject to change every year. Assignments and staffing units are not determined until mid-June and there is always the possibility that the teacher you have requested for your child will not be teaching at this school in September. Your understanding in this area is greatly appreciated.

More details regarding graduation will follow as they become available.

DRUG USE AMONG ONTARIO STUDENTS

According to the Drug Use Among Ontario Students 1997-2001 document released by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, 53% of grade eight students have tried alcohol and 12% tried cannabis for the first time during the previous 12 months. Ecstasy (MDMA) was tried by 3% of grade eight students. Ecstasy use jumped to 9% when students reached grade nine. Unfortunately, Peterborough is not immune to alcohol and drug use among the student population.

Unsupervised grade 8 graduation parties are prime locations for underage drinking and ecstacy use. This can result in:

Since grade eight graduation is such a pivotal point in a young person's life, I would encourage parents and teachers to address these concerns before graduation day. The Health Unit can provide several resources including videos for students or parents. They have many "mocktail" (alcohol-free drink) recipes to help make parties festive.
