INTERMEDIATE TERRY FOX RUN

A SCREAMING SUCCESS!

On Thursday, September 27th, Nicholl’s Oval was a blur of colour and sound: yellow and blue from Kenner, garnet and gray from P.C.V.S., yellow and black from Lakefield, but best of all ... green and white, the colours of Adam Scott. This year was a special year for the Adam Scott Intermediates. We got to join the high school students in raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation. Not only did we help raise an incredible $144,000 total for Peterborough area schools, we got to participate in the run!

On the day of the run, after our lunch break, the intermediates joined the high school students and together we walked down to Nicholl’s Oval. It was overwhelming! There was a sense of pride seeing the hundreds of students from our community marching around Nicholl’s Oval, decked out in school colours and full of spirit. Thanks to Brett Edgerton and Jen Shearer, Adam Scott was led into our school song and many other cheers that kept our school spirit high. All in all, it was a great way to spend an afternoon representing our school.

WHAT DO TEACHERS REALLY DO ON THOSE P.A. DAYS?

Adam Scott Intermediate teachers were quite busy on October 07, 2005. For the first hour and a half, Mr. Fenton ran a workshop on Classroom Management. The purpose of this was to present a variety of strategies to promote and support student success. (The teachers were well behaved during this session.)

Our resource teacher, Ms. Segriff, spent an hour in-servicing teachers on the new electronic system for generating individual education plans. When implementation is complete, we will produce them faster and more efficiently.

The morning was completed with an examination of teacher’s responsibilities to report to the C.A.S. Also, professional obligations to the College of Teachers were reviewed.

Our afternoon was filled with a hands-on session in the computer lab as we learned new computer programs.

A good deal was accomplished that day. The most important of which is the capacity to do an even better job caring for and educating your students.

HISTORY FAIR

For all students with a special interest in Canadian history, geography, or current events: the History Fair group will be meeting soon with Mme. Harding. Come and find out about next spring’s “History Fair”! Participants present research projects on the topic of their choice and, as with “Science Fair”, there are regional and national levels.

Research skills workshops will be given to guide students in the research process beginning in November. This is a great opportunity to investigate past Canadian mysteries, make personal connections with heritage or, explore issues that affect our land.

GRADE 7 & 8

BOOS AND GHOULS

PLAN BIG HALLOWE’EN DANCE

The excitement in the hallways is beginning to soar as The Spirit Committee of our new SAC begins to plan the big dance.

Students gain leadership experience by taking care of all the small planning details from booking the gym, to selling tickets, to organizing decorations.

A big feature of the festivities will be the Costume Contest. We have asked our School Council to be the impartial judges. We expect this to be a lot of fun and there are mystery prizes for the best costumes.

If we get some good pictures we will be sure to share them with you.

NEW FORMAT FOR STUDENT COUNCIL

We have totally re-organized The Adam Scott Intermediate Student Council into one central executive, co-chaired by students, including several working committees.

These groups include: The Spirit Council (responsible for dances and special events), The Ambassadors (who represent the school at community functions), The Athletic Committee (which helps set up and maintain intramural sports) and the Yearbook Committee (responsible for producing the yearbook). The structure is totally flexible to allow for new contingencies as they arise.

The big advantage of the new organization is to create more leadership positions for our students. The best way to develop leadership in young people is to allow them to lead in a variety of situations. Our first few meetings have been entirely successful. The best is yet to come.

HOMEWORK POSTED ON THE WEB

Our teachers post homework on our website so that you can monitor progress. You can access it at www.adamscott.ca.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Every year, Samaratin’s Purse helps thousands of underprivileged children with aid, food, water and education. Adam Scott is putting together a bunch of boxes filled with Christmas gifts to send to Africa, Asia and South America. If you would like to put together your own boxes, please contact Mr. Fenton. If you would like to help but you don’t want to do a whole box, you can send in items such as: hard candies, toiletries, mild soap that doesn’t have a scent, shirts, sunglasses, toys (nothing that could scare or harm the child) or any school supplies or colouring books and markers. All boxes are due Thursday, November 3rd. Remember the children; they should be given gifts too!

“ANNIE” - THE MUSICAL

Congratulations to everyone who made the cast of this year’s school play, the musical Annie! They’re off to a great start and, believe it or not, they are just touching up Act One. We would especially point out Lauren Davidson (Annie) who is doing a spectacular job as our lead. She has a great voice and does awesomely on all of her solos. All together, she is doing a terrific job. We think she was born for this part.

The cast has shown a lot of commitment, as they practise every Sunday with the full cast and some of the cast Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The opening show will be December 8th at 7:00 p.m. There are two more shows on the 9th and 10th at 7:00 p.m. A special thanks is extended to all the adults who have put this play together. Also, we wish to thank the crew who have done a superior job with the props.

Hope to see you there!!

Warning, Frequent Accidents! .....................

Always use stairs to get up onto the stage. That goes for you too, Mr. Bemrose!!

ADAM SCOTT SOCCER LIONS

The Adam Scott Intermediate soccer team played a great tournament last week at Beavermead. They finished 2nd out of 19 teams after regular tournament play. Unfortunately, they lost a tough game against the Lakefield Tigers 2-1 in the play-offs, a team they had beaten earlier in the day.

Way to go team!!

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING LIONS

The Adam Scott runners did our school proud last week with a great showing by all competitors. There were over 50 runners in each category and it was a tough, hilly course!

Well done runners!!

Mrs. Knox
