At Adam Scott, we believe that education should have these purposes: to help us reach our full potential; to teach us to accept responsibility for our development and behaviour; to increase our awareness of the needs of the world, and through our understanding and positive actions, to make it a better place.

ADMINISTRATION’S MESSAGE

Throughout the start of this school year, we at Adam Scott have had a number of opportunities to meet and review the comfort level of all our new students be they in Grade 7 or Grade 8.The feeling in the Intermediate hallway is one of positive as well as peaceful interaction. As we have talked to our new students there have been many tales of success and a feeling that students are beginning to develop an affiliation and closeness to this educational institution. All change and transition can be difficult; however, it is wonderful to see all of our new students adapting so successfully in this new year.

Another change introduced this year is the amalgamation of our two school councils into one. Our school council meetings are now going to be a combined effort with parents from both the Secondary and Elementary panels to discuss school wide issues as well as panel specific issues. These meetings will occur the third Tuesday of every month and all parents are invited to attend and become actively involved.

The Athletics, Arts, Academics and Community Service program (AAACS) that was developed last year will also be running this year.In this program students are encouraged to sign up for a number of extra-curricular activities, clubs and volunteer experiences in order to earn gold or silver medallions.Academics are also an area in which excellence is rewarded so students can earn points toward these medallions.Medal presentation assemblies run at the conclusion of the school year.

Students who are looking for community based charities to donate their time or money should consider Terry Fox and his attempt to cross Canada and raise funding for Cancer research. Our Secondary students will be will be going downtown for the Terry Fox run this month. Our Intermediate students will be watching an educational video and learning about this Canadian hero’s battle with Cancer.Any donations to the school would be greatly appreciated.

It has been a very positive start to the new school year and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Intermediate staff for their efforts to provide a safe and academic focused program to all of the students in the Intermediate Division. The students themselves have shown that they are also focusing on doing well in both the academic and social aspects of school and are looking forward to a positive experience both inside and outside of the classroom.

QUEBEC TRIP

The grade 7 and 8 French Immersion classes are planning a trip to Quebec in June. This trip promises to be a wonderful culminating educational experience for these students. In order to help decrease the personal expenses associated with the trip, a number of parents have been working diligently to have a number of different fund-raisers.One such fund-raiser focuses on the purchase of items at M&Ms Meat Shops. If you shop at M&M, or your friends and family do, you can help by telling M&M staff that you are helping out Adam Scott Intermediate #96.By giving the cashier this information before your purchases have been rung in, a certain percentage of the bill total may be donated to the school. The French Immersion students will have access to the proceeds.Thank-you for your help.

DENTAL SCREENING

Peterborough County-City Health Unit dental staff will be conducting dental screening on grade 8 students attending ASCVI & Intermediate. The Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care requires a survey of selected schools to be completed over a two year period.Visual dental screenings are conducted by a Registered Dental Hygienist using a sterilized mirror and/or explorer. The hygienist will assess the need for dental treatment, education, topical fluoride and pit and fissure sealants.A card with the results will be sent home with your child, and those eligible for fluoride and/or sealants, will be given the opportunity to attend a free clinic at the Health Unit.Concerned parents/guardians can make an appointment at the Health Unit if they suspect their child (up to the 14th birthday) has a dental problem.Financial assistance through the Children in Need of Treatment program is available for families without dental insurance and/or the financial means to obtain urgent dental treatment, providing the child meets dental eligibility criteria.
