WHY IT’S EFFECTIVE

1.  Something Good

Each student shares “something good” that is going on in their life.  It could be about their weekend, holiday, school life etc.  Make sure you insist on appropriate sharing.

This exercises encourages students to focus on the positive events that are going on in their life.  Helps students get to know each other better.  Helps you to get to know your students better on a more personal level.  Helps promote class unity.

2.  Favourite Question

Begin or end class with a “favourite question” exercise.  Students share with the class what their favourite movie, book, food, actor etc. is.

Once again, this promotes oral participation as students love to talk about what they like.  It also promotes class unity.  It also helps to promote a positive tone in the class.

3.  Student of the Week

Every Friday, present a deserving student with a “student of the week award”.  Make sure you give a short speech before the presentation about the student and their accomplishments.

This exercise helps point out the role models in the class.  It’s a positive way of reinforcing expectations. Students want to earn this honor so it also improves behavior.  Rewards students who may not often get recognition.

4.  Walk-About

If a student in your class seems to be troubled or upset.  Quietly take them aside and either talk to them quietly in the hall or take a short walk through the halls.  Express concern and sympathy and encourage them to discuss their problem and find some possible solutions.

A student will not be able to focus in class if they are upset by a problem they are experiencing.  Allowing the student to talk about the problem and come up with possible solution then makes it possible for them to succeed in the classroom.  If a problem is beyond your expertise, then send them to the Guidance office.
