IMPLEMENTATION

WHY IT’S EFFECTIVE

5.  Do not allow any negative comments in class.

Immediately speak to a student if they make a negative comment about other students, the curriculum or you. If they continue, keep them after class and possibly billet them until they can behave positively.

Negativity is contagious.   If you allow students to constantly make negative comments, this will spread until the entire class is affected.  Model positive behavior.  Teach students how to express negative attitudes in a more positive way.

6.  Call home for good behavior.

Call parents when their child has done something good.  This call could be based on behavior, attitude or successful tests or assignments.

This will create a bond between the parent and you.  Students are thrilled when good calls go home.  It is a lot less stressful to make a positive phone call home than a negative.

7.  Take an interest in your students’ extracurricular school activities.

Go to the school play, sporting events, school car washes, fashion shows etc.  Pledge money for Terry Fox run. Make sure you compliment your students who participated. Let them know you were there and you were proud of them.

This helps encourage students to participate in extra curricular activities.  Praising your students promotes a positive relationship.  Students realize you care about them outside the classroom too.

8.  Hello and Good-bye

Be in your classroom when your students arrive.  Say hello and call them by name.  When they leave, say good-bye to them.  Make them feel welcome when they arrive and valued when they leave.  When you see them in the halls, continue to acknowledge them.

Students often need to learn proper social cues.  Modeling friendly, social behavior helps them to learn.  Simply greeting them and calling them by name can begin the class on a positive note.  It makes them feel important and special.

9.  Be positive before they even start your course.

Even before your course starts, let students know you are excited about them being in your class.  Let them know in advance that they are important to you.

If you let a student know in advance that you think your relationship is going to be a good one-it probably will be. This also helps a student feel less anxious about starting a new school year or semester.
