WHY IT’S EFFECTIVE |
10. Clean Slate |
If you have had problems with a student the year before or the day before-constantly remind them that they can have a fresh start. DO NOT hold grudges. Model forgiving behavior. |
Students need to know that the classroom is a safe environment where they can make mistakes but then be forgiven. They need to know that their past bad behavior will not “follow” them through high school. |
11. Avoid public confrontation.
If a student needs some behavior modification, talk to them after class or take them out into the hall for a private discussion. |
The misbehaving student’s friends will often defend their friend which then puts you at a disadvantage. By keeping confrontation out of your classroom, you can still maintain a positive tone. Students are more receptive to admonishment when it’s one-on-one. |
12. Sandwich
When you are calling home, writing report card comments, giving feedback on assignments, make sure you begin and end with positive comments. |
By “sandwiching” negative comments between positive ones, you are ensuring that you are focusing on some of the positive aspects of the student, work or behavior. Helps the student’s self-esteem if they are given positive feedback along with the negative. |
13. Limit Rules and make them positive.
When establishing classroom rules, prioritize and decide which ones are really important. Discard the unimportant ones. |
Beginning the school year with a long list of prohibitions sets a negative tone. Assume that your students are responsible and are going to behave well. Word rules in a positive way. ie: Please be on time. NOT Don’t be late. |
14. Model positive behavior with colleagues. |
Always speak kindly and courteously to other staff members. Never say anything negative about a colleague in your classroom. Never let a student bad mouth another teacher in your classroom. |
Students learn by example. If you are insisting that students treat their peers with courtesy and respect, then you must do the same. |
