West Semi-Formal

Vikings will dazzle once again!

Semi-Formal has been a part of the West tradition for many years.  That tradition lives on this year.....

Semi-Formal at the West is organized by Mr. Fraser and Student Council, with the help of many other Vikings. This year, the Semi-Formal will be held on Saturday January 17th, 2008. The theme of this year’s Semi-Formal was not available at press time. If you’re a Viking and you would like to help organize and/or decorate, you are asked to see Mr. Fraser in room 103. Mr. Fraser is available during most lunch hours, before school and after school as well. Student Council invites everyone to this event!

Tickets are $35 for a couple or $20 single.  It’s going to be a great night, so don’t forget to come out!

West Holiday Feast a Great Success!

A group of students here at Cobourg West organize and host a Community Holiday Dinner during the holiday season. This dinner gives the opportunity for students to get to know the community and interact with members of the community and also provides the less fortunate people in our area and surrounding areas an opportunity to get together as a whole and enjoy a nice warm meal. This year, the dinner committee consisted of almost 80 West Vikings! Every member was asked to contribute to the dinner by bringing in appetizers, drinks, desserts, turkeys, chickens and etc. There was a lot of food and there was certainly a great turnout. It is very important that we give back to the community, which has given us so much; a wonderful school, with wonderful people, all in a wonderful town. The committee was organized by Barinder Gill, under the supervision of teacher adviser, Mr. Fraser. Mr. Fraser and Barinder would like to thank the local sponsors and all of the students who helped out.  Congratulations and job well done!

Celebrating Academic Achievement

The academic awards assembly took place on Thursday, November 21st, 2008 at 8:45 in the main gym.  Please see the Awards section above for the names of all award winners.  Congratulations from everyone at the West!

Camp Arowhon

On Tuesday September 16th, 2008, grade tens from the West departed for their annual trip to Camp Arowhon. This was the 21st trip to Camp Arowhon. Camp Arowhon is a place West teachers take the students to get to know each other and to expand friendships. The students are put into groups and work together in a bunch of different activities. There is a rock wall and initiatives, arts and crafts, a nature walk, kayaking and canoeing, square dancing, talent shows and much more.

This year, the West had the largest group of grade tens it has ever had go to Camp Arowhon. 136 students went along with 5 helpers and 15 staff members. Camp staff was not there this year so the teachers looked after everything like food, snacktime and entertainment for nighttime activities. The students quickly learned about ZERO FOOD WASTE!

It was beautiful weather this year. Kayaking and canoeing with Mr. Allen, Mr. Cordukes, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Thomson, and Mrs. Gibson were all present. Jenna Davis said that her favourite activity was definitely kayaking. The wind picked up on one of the days and two boys, (Mac Ito and Daniel Welborne) got stranded out on the lake with one paddle because they broke the other one (all was eventually well)! The nature walk was a highlight as well.  "Their were beautiful views" says Cameron Thompson. The rock wall and initiatives were favoured by the boys, but not so much by Eric Reinert, who broke his wrist the first morning there!

Nighttime activities were as always, eventful. Jenn Peeples says "I will always remember how fun the square dancing was!".  The talent show, and performances by Christopher Sudlow and Daniel Welborne, will be fond memories for the people who witnessed them. Mr. Leguard and Mr. Mack did a performance for the students as well. Mr. Leguard says " We just went up there to make fools of ourselves!".

As always, Camp Arowhon was enjoyed by everyone who went and it will be remembered by many as their favourite high school experience.

Grade 9 Day

Once again, C.D.C.I West Student Council put on a successful and fantastic grade 9 day on September 5th, 2008 down at the West field.

The theme this year was cartoons and the volunteers really got into character. Some choices for favourite outfit were: Tyler Elder, who dressed as Aladdin, Yurisa Clarke, who dressed as Wilma Flintstone, Kelsey Thomas and Jenny Rutherford, who dressed as Winnie the Pooh and Piglet, and Laura Niblett, who dressed as Minnie Mouse. The volunteers might have had even more fun than the grade 9's did. Dylan Bell said "I wish I was in grade 9 again!".

The events this year were similar to last year.  There was of course the tug-a-war, the sponge game, the chair game, crab races and more. The favorite game seemed to be the sponges, run by Christina Johansson and Taylor Cunningham. The chair game was also a favorite.  Carly Cunningham says "The chair game was intense and hilarious!".

The West puts on this tradition every year as a way to welcome the grade 9's to the school. It also helps them to get to know one another in a fun, carefree atmosphere. "It's a good way for grade 9s to get to know each other and the West" says volunteer Kelsey Thomas. Student Council Vice- President, Jacob Vanderham says "Grade 9 day is an excellent opportunity for new students coming to the West to meet and interact with fellow grade 9's and become involved with our school spirit!".

Looking around at all the activities you realize what a workout grade 9 day really is. With the grade 9's burning off energy, it was good to know that there were hotdogs and a water jug full of orange drink donated by McDonalds close by.

When grade 9 day came to a close, West President Liam Rafferty led the tradition of singing the school song. Then the grade 9's returned to their fourth period classes covered with cottage cheese and vanilla pudding!  What a great day for all!
