Temperate Deciduous Forest Biome

Frankfort, Illinois

 United States

This ecology study has been produced Ms. Julie Widinski's and her class, along with Mr. Ross Widinski and his class, all from Lincoln-Way High East High School.  This school is located in Frankfort, Illinois, USA.  The classes are freshman biology classes.  The students are about 14 years old.  They performed the field study in November.  The study site was a local forested area.  It is a second growth deciduous forest located between urban and suburban areas.

The classes were divided into 7 groups of 4 students.  Each group was assigned a particular area in which to study.  Each group created a 4m x 4m quadrat using flags to mark the corners and string to mark the edges.  Within this quadrat they observed and identified animals and trees and recorded their data.  They also gathered a leaf from each type of tree for in class study.  They also took a measure of the available sunlight in the quadrat.

They then formed a 1m x 1m quadrat, with corners marked with flags and sides marked with string.  In this smaller quadrat they put a 500 mL soil sample and put it into a plastic bag for class examination.

In the class they massed 100g of soil.  The soil was warmed for 3 days to remove soil moisture, remassed and then the soil moisture (%) was determined.  The the soil sample was then heated to 500 C for 2 hours to eliminate all organic matter such as twigs, roots and leaves.  The soil was remassed to determine the soil organic content (%).  All of the biotic data about trees and plants were gathered from the 7 groups and were put together.
