Abiotic Data for Peter's Woods

SITE DESCRIPTION       ABIOTIC DATA FROM THE ENTIRE CLASS

Methodology of the Abiotic Study

1.  Walk through Peter’s Woods and find an area in which we want to conduct our research in.

2.  Measure off the quadrate into 10m by 10m using string (Use this area as the basis for sampling tree species).

3.  Within the 10m by 10m area, make a second quadrate measuring 4m by 4m (Use this area as the basis for sampling saplings and shrubs).

4.  Within the 4m by 4m quadrate, make a third quadrate measuring 1m by 1m (Use this area to take a 500ml sample of soil and seal it in a plastic bag).

5.  Back at the lab after the Field Study, take the soil sample and measure it’s mass.

6.  Warm the soil sample gently overnight, and record it’s mass the next day.

7.  Heat the soil sample strongly to burn all of the organic matter.  Record it’s mass.

8.  Determine the % of soil moisture and the % of soil organic matter using the formulas below.

% of soil moisture = ((starting mass - dry mass)/start mass) x 100

% of soil organic matter = ((dry mass - burned mass)/start mass) x 100

9.  The final step is to compare your results with the other groups, and average out your findings.
