Pohutukawa is a plant that produces red flowers in December. Its distinctive Christmas coloured flowers are a sign of Christmas for New Zealanders.
When the flower dies back, the ovary forms seeds within a woody capsule. The plant's latin name is Metrosideros excelsa.
