Plants of the Northland

Mangrove trees create a unique ecosystem in the north.  They live at the salt water edge, even in the salt water.  Their common name is Manawa and their latin name is Avicennia resinifera. 

Northland is a hotspot of  biodiversity.  This is the 3 fingered 5 finger plant.  Note the compound leaves with 3 leaflets.  It is related to the coastal five finger plant.  This plant is endemic to Whangaroa and Little Barrier Island.  Its latin name is Pseudopanax gilleseii.
