Site Description

Type of Ecosystem: Shoreline Tidal Zone

Latitude: 35 degrees south

Longitude: 174 degrees east

The study site was the west edge of Taipa beach, located at the north end of the North Island of New Zealand.  The beach is quite sandy and long.  Its 1 edge was made up of a series of rocks and rock pools.  Each pool had many small marine animals.  Some organisms were found close to the sea, like seaweed and whelks, while other shellfish were found up to 12 meters up the rocks.

Students set up transects that led from the shoreline, to the water.  Along the transects they placed 20cm square quadrats every 0.5 meters.  They recorded the types and numbers of every species in each quadrat, as well as other notes about the site.

The white measuring tape runs from the low tide mark, up the shore.  This line is the transect.  Every .5 meters along this transect samples were taken in a 20 cm squared quadrat, a small rectangular sampling area.

On a sunny morning we went on a little trip, the rocky shore expedition, to find out what different organisms need to survive.  The tides, sun, predators....
