THE COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION
Parents need to be aware of the following
information:
• The 40 hours of Community Service mandated by the
Ministry of Education remains a requirement for graduation for all
students entering grade nine beginning in the year 1999.
• Students will jeopardize their eligibility to
graduate if they do not complete and submit approved documentation for
their 40 hours of community service.
• Students need to be sure that their proposed
community service activities are approved by checking with a teacher or
guidance counsellor before embarking on an activity.
Students MAY NOT count hours spent doing
activities that:
• would normally be performed for wages by a person
in the workplace (including babysitting, petsitting, etc).
• are considered to be an expectation for members of
organizations such as Scouts or Cadets (the exception being charity events
taken on by these organizations). Note that time donated as a group leader
does count.
• are required for members of a club or team,
including fund raising activities that result in the reduction of uniform,
registration, equipment or travel fees.
• occur during instructional time on a school day.
• involve the operation of a vehicle, power tools or
scaffolding.
All documented hours of approved community
service must be endorsed by an “official” SUPERVISOR WHO IS NOT THE
STUDENT’S PARENT
The purpose of the Community Involvement initiative
is to assist students in developing a sense of civic responsibility and to
promote leadership within the community by having students donate their
services to people in need or charitable or “service” organizations that
depend on community volunteers.
The school has a bulletin board to advertize a
variety of community service opportunities that are available to students.
Students are encouraged to talk to their teachers, guidance counselors,
parents and friends for other suggestions.
We hope that parents will encourage their
children to get involved and make a difference in their community. |
