Vikings Do Youth Build!

WEST DO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY YOUTH BUILD!

A great group of West students put on their tool belts and participated in the first ever, Habitat For Humanity Youth Build. This continued the great tradition that was started three years ago when West students picked up hammers and shovels to help out with Habitat For Humanity.

Students helped to rebuild a house that had been dedicated for this special Youth Build, on Alexandria Drive in Cobourg.

Mrs Knight and Mr Walkau would like to thank the students who participated in the 2 day build. Your compassion, dedication and sheer hard work was greatly appreciated.

You should be proud of the work that you accomplished!

Special thanks goes out to Mr Fraser and the West Student's Council for their generous donation of $400 to this Habitat Youth Build!

We are already looking forward to a fall 2008 build so stay tuned for details.

Vikings Say Farewell to Mr Kawzenuk

VIKINGS THANK MR KAWZENUK!

It is will great sadness that the staff and students of the West say farewell to our principal Mr Kawzenuk and we wish him well at this new school next year.

It has been an awesome 5 years with Mr Kawzenuk as our fearless principal. He has been an outstanding leader and supporter of the West having completely transformed the school into the amazing place that it is.

The school spirit has never been more intense making this school a great place to be a part of.

Being a tireless supporter of public education and always having the best interests of students at heart, we are the top school in the board and easily one of the best in the entire province. Mr Kawzenuk has been instrumental in a wide range of projects and initiatives from the new Mac lab to Drama studio to the 9 smart boards to supporting the vast number of sports teams.

Thanks, Mr Kawzenuk and Good Luck!

Vikings Dominate Athletics!

VIKINGS CELEBRATE ATHLETIC SUCCESS!

Staff and students celebrated another outstanding year of athletic excellence at the recent Athletic Awards Assembly.

This year Viking teams captured a total of 14 COSSA and Kawartha championships which is double the number of any other school in the KPR board.

In fact over 300 students or 40% of the students at the West participated in sports teams ranging from volleyball to basketball to swimming to track to ultimate frisbee and the list goes on. Over half or the teaching staff is directly involved in coaching with most of the rest of the staff indirectly supporting the various teams.

The West fields more sports teams than any other school in the KPR board and which includes schools that our twice our size.

Special congratulations goes out this year to student wrestler, Tyler Cochrane who won the gold medal at the Ontario Winter Games and the silver medal at the Canadian Nationals (80kg division). Congratulations Tyler! The West is very proud of you.

Thanks goes out to all of the staff and student who participate in the various sports throughout the year and also to the numerous community coaches and supporters who help make it all happen!
