PolioPlus
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative

In 1985 Rotary International launched PolioPlus, one of the most ambitious humanitarian programs ever undertaken by a private entity. By 1988, the World Health Organization adopted the goal of global polio eradication. Since then, polio cases have dropped by 99.8 percent and more than two billion children have been immunized and spared from death or paralysis.

In the spring of 2003, the Cobourg West Interact Club, inspired by its mentors and their passion for this initiative, chose to join the Rotary Club to help fulfill their promise to reach every child and to deliver an everlasting gift – a world free of polio. The dedication, enthusiasm and leadership provided by our Interact members was amazing. Their determination to make a difference in the world continues to set a wonderful example for us all.

CDCIWest Interact Club PolioPlus Campaign:

We kicked off our campaign with an educational assembly for the students in March to help students to understand more about the disease and the PolioPlus campaign.  Our goal was to raise $1,500

• Our April Penny Drive grade challenge brought in $1,600

• Our Square Dance in May raised $150

• The Bake Sale and Java Jam in May brought in another $225

• Our Car Wash at the Garden Centre in Midtown Mall raised another $325

In total, we raised $2,300, enough money to vaccinate over 3300 individuals in Third World countries!
